I have a theory that when the Dir and Garhajis arrived in the north and met the locals
worshiping Bucur Bucayr (the Yibir king) who was by the way killed by Sheikh Yusuf
Al Kawneyn (a close associate of the GX) after that the locals converted to Islam that is
when the idea of "Isaaq" was born.

Aw Barkhadle (the blessed saint) vs Bucur Bucayr.

Except the Yibir king story is a fairy tale. Most likely Yibir were the last to convert to Islam hence the stigma

Dabshid is a pre-Islamic holiday that’s celebrated by my clansmen and many others in the south. It’s originally the Somali New Years as we had an ancient solar calendar. That is the strongest connection we have left with our ancestors.
is that when they burn the unsi or something at night walking by holding the unsi burner high ?

No it is not. The Yibir, Gabooye etc were once a upon time ago powerful large groups in the
north which the other locals were under. Times change though. Their arrogance of rejecting
Islam while the other Somalis submitted early led to their downfall hence the death of Bucur
Bucayr.

The Darood, Hawiye and Rahanweyn kept a lot of pre-Islam practices and names. It is very interesting.

Abowe I believe it’s because the North accepted Islam first and it trickled down south later. This idea that all Somalis become Muslim at once doesn’t even make sense lmao especially given Ajuuran empire actually converted folks to Islam and that was what Middle Ages?

Kinda of. In theory people use fireworks now but my dad said back then they’d literally jump over fire to signal the New Year and would have partied and Ajuuran included the sport of Istunka which is the sword fight between clans as good sportsmanship.

So what did they worship, Waaq? Also why did they face stigma but that notion of lower castes Somali clans doesn’t exist in the South?

Sounds like a fairytale

Yibir and Gabooye are two different groups and there's no evidence to suggest that Gabooye were ever powerful (unless you have some to share)

Waaq is for native east Africans like Oromo, Darood , Hawiye etc. Dir and Garhajis are not from east Africa originally so they worshiped something else pre-Islam.

Did you knew just 150 years ago Oromos dominated southern Somalia (Jubbaland)? and today
there is no trace of them there. So why would it be shocking if Yibir were powerful in the north
once upon a time ago under their King Bucur Bucayr.

I don't get the correlation.

First of all, do you believe Sheikh Isaaq existed or is a fairytale?

Sheikh Isaaq as a Banu Hashim man fathering millions of Somalis existing is a fairytale.
However it is possible a Muslim missionary man called Sheikh Isaaq existed and then the
local pagans adopted his name after converting to Islam. So there is many theories.

So you don't believe in one myth but you believe in another? Interesting :hmm:

Anyways agree to disagree. I say bucur bucayr is clan mythos a.k.a bullshit

The difference is the myth of Sheikh Isaaq a Banu Hashim man fathering modern day Isaaqs has been busted by DNA results. You have no proof Bucur Bucayr aka the Yibir king is a fairy-tale though. So it is a open case still.

And yet bucur bucayr and sheikh Isaaq are supposed to be historical contemporaries :ftw9nwa: how Sway?

@Bohol So the DNA results mean that Habar Awal are actually more closely related to Darood and Hawiye than Dir or Garhajis?

Interesting. :yacadiim:

It is Yusuf Al Koweyn (the man named after Awbarkhadle town outside Hargeisa) that kills
Bucur Bucayr in the story not Sheikh Isaaq. Besides we are not talking about the existence
of a man called Sheikh Isaaq but the fact he didn't father modern day Isaaqs since he is
supposed to be "Banu Hashim" aka J1. Two different things.
