There was more variety in styles. There were famines, the Ethiopian war crippled Somalia too, so I think it has to do with all Somali women wearing the same jilbab style.

I fully agree. pre-90s Somalis had the choice to wear either traditional or Islamic clothing whilst nowadays you could be shunned at best and at worst killed for wearing our traditional attires.

Yeah it would be nice if women had the choice to wear a hijab or not back home. Let's be real though there are 1000 more pressing concerns.
