I look at the AA community, it's the only matriarchal community in the western world. Women have more power, educated and have more influence in the household than the men in their community. They're begging for their men to become more patriarchal; provide care and protection for women. Whereas our women want less protection.

I refuse to abandon our good religion, culture and good principles of life.. That is how I used to think when analyzing the female dominant family structure in African American homes. As I read more and got educated on the social history of America, it became clear that this matriarchy was born out of systemic racism against African American men exclusively. They were arrested wholesale and systemically used for cheap labor through privately and federally owned prison systems. To feed the labor market with cheap man-power, many states came up with schemes to arrest and put a record on African American men easily so they can be used for .25 cents a man an hour by rich Americans and companies through the prison labor. Both republican and Democratic governments contributed to the harsh realities of African american lives.

- Long prison records for minor offenses white people would not go to jail for
- Government imposed red-zoning of African Americans so no African American family can buy or own a home in good neighborhoods
- Low paying jobs since most African American wouldn't be able to pay for college or fill out application process for minor criminal records like stealing a candy when they were teens

- Total and systemic exclusion from all opportunities including those who served in America's wars overseas when they returned.


African Americans became what society thought of them and forced them to be. No human being can endure the hardships these people suffered over generations.

That is why I thank God for coming to America as a Somali with culture and background of my own so I can face the challenges with strong self-worth and look down on white people myself for cultural supremacy I feel on my part.

That is given although I suspect with the move to cultural preservation of minority communities in the west/America, there will be no fast decline to the identity of the new generation. The Jewish people survived always in larger more dominant than them societies because they preserved their identity and culture. Modern societies allow the survival of minorities among them. As long as some Somalis remain committed to their culture, Somali descendants in America will find a cause to celebrate their origin and ethnicity. The first generation left strong Somali foundation for the next generation to take over. Many youngsters will be lost and disappear but many others and as much will remain moored to the Somali community and continue carrying the Somali torch.

There is a Somali Museum, Somali mosques, Somali schools, Somali businesses, Somali truck drivers, Somali doctors, Somali police officers, Somali lawyers, Somali - everything. Many Americans in the states where Somalis live in great numbers have heard of Somalis. Somalis gave Islam visibility it did not have before 1990s. In the aggregate, first Somali immigrant generation left their marks on America. That will continue in the foreseeable future.
