Funny story I came across a while back:

Beri waxa Somalia ku noolaa nin Alla kood ah oo la odhan jiray Ina Xagaa Dheere. Wuxuu lahaa adhi badan. Dhimashadii adhigiisa ayaa aad u badatay. Waxa la yaab noqotay sababta adhigu u dhimanayo. Sidaa darteed wuxuu go’aan ku gaadhey in uu adhiga kala qaybiyo oo uu qayb siiyo Illaahey, qaybna isagu qaato.

Once upon a time in Somalia, there was a man named Ina Xaga Dheere, known for his rebellion against God. He had many goats, however they constantly died. He decided to divide his herd into two groups, one for himself and one for God.

Markaas adhigii laba xerro oo isleeg ayuu ka dhigey. Ina Xagaa Dheere Illaahay ayuu la hadley oo ku yidhi,
“Illaahayow adhiga qeybtaas adiga ayaa iska leh ee sidaad doonto u maamul, laakiin qaybtayda shaqo kuma darsan kartid.”

After dividing the goats into two equal groups, he told God, "God, tbis group belongs to you, do with it what you will, but my half is none of your business"

Adhigii uu soocday Ina Xagaa Dheere dhimashadii ma daynin, hase ahaatee xoolihii Illaahey uu u soocay waxba kama dhiman. Markaa wuu fikiray, oo wuxuu go’aansaday in markasta oo adhigiisa wax ka dhintaan uu isna wax ka dillo kuwa Illaahay.

Unfortunately, Ina Xagar Dheere's group continued to drop dead while God's portion remained perfectly in tact. He therefore decided that whenever one of his goats died, he would kill one of God's.

Maalin ayaa waxa dhimatay lax adhigiisa ka mid ah, markaas ayuu intuu Ina Xagaa Dheere warran soo qaatay lax ah kuwii uu ilaahay u soocay ku dhuftay. Laxdii ayaa qaylisay markaas buu Ina Xagaa Dheere yidh “CAAAAC, afka xun day. Kuwayagu miyaanay naf leheyn”.

One day, as another of his goats died, Ina Xagar Dheere grab a spear and speared one of God's goats to death. The goat cried out in pain, and In Xagar Dheere mockingly mimicked the goat's screams, "Caac, look at it's stupid mouth. Don't ours have lives too" (kinda hard to translate).

Maalin ayaa roob da’ay markaas odaygii Ina Xagaa Dheere dhulka ayuu afka biyo kaga cab is yidhi. Ileen Illaahay baa u cadhoodaye, dhulkii ayaa afka kaga dhegay. Wax uu sameeyo ayuu garan waayay, firig firig iyo kaadi baa ka dhamaatay, markaas wuxu xasuustay in uu Ilaahay ku gafay.

One day, after the rains fell, Ina Xagar Dheere attempted to take a drink from a small pond. Unfortunately, God was angry at him which caused the his mouth to become stuck to the ground. He couldn't figure out what to do, tried to twist and turn while pissing himself, which finally caused him to remember God (way funnier in Somali)

Beryo ayuu iska ilaalin jiray in uu Ilaahay ku gafo, maalintii dambe ayaa adhigii aad u dhintay markaas ayuu is hayn kari waayay oo yidhi “Haddii aan aamuso xoolaha sidaa laga deyn maayo. Haddii aan hadalnona waa af salax kula dheg

For a few days, he tried not to blaspheme against God, but could not hold his anger after more of his goats died yelling, "if I say nothing my goats continue to die, speak up and the ground itself sticks to my mouth ( again, funnier in Somali)

I guarantee you if all of you were born in Kentucky or Delhi, you'd be arguing about being Christian or Hindu first and American/Indian second. But even those people would put their nation first.

I'm Somali first. By that I mean I would put interests of my nation before any Muslim/ummah interest. I would also help a needy Somali gaal before a Muslim Yemeni. Your religion or sexual orientation has nothing to do with your ethnicity/nationality.

when he says kuwaygi miyaan naf lahayn it sounds like he's saying "and mine are (considered) lifeless" no?

btw what is this dialect? I nearly puke every time I hear it :icon lol:

I thought Anglo-Saxon cultures were supposed to be extremely individualistic, but British Somalis seem way more collectivist/tribal than other diaspora Somalis. European Somalis (non-FOB) are the most individualistic diaspora Somalis it seems.

Are you saying I'm collectivist? British society is a mixed bag, but deep down they are conservative. They aren't as louche and progressive as continentals.

hmmm so if you could be reincarnated as a somali gaal or non somali muslim... which would you choose :patrice:

Actually it would be more like "and don't mine (his flock) also have a life?"

And the dialect is standard Somali, maybe Reer Waqooyi.

I'm confused by your question. I had no choice what race born as or religion I was brought up in either way.

I don't believe in reincarnation anyway, but if I had the choice I would rather be brought back as part of a superior intergalactic alien species, instead of an earthling.

I interpreted as miyeenan naf lahayan as in don't they have lives too :icon lol:

I think it's a deep deep waqooyi accent :icon lol:

Brother isn't adhigisa spelt ari instead. Cause I was struggling to differentiate it from adhiga(you in Somali).

But I am proud of my Somali reading, I understood all of it. :rejoice: I started watching Somali TV channels like universal TV again and read the news feed below it. I have gotten much better.

Humanity before religiosity therefore, in some aspects Muslim first and some others somali first.

It depends on what you define as Muslim, for me it's someone that strives for balance, and to consciously submit to the will of the Creator, I don't believe in a cultural Islam, traditional Islam transcended culture which is why Somalis preserved their culture up until the Salafi Menace that exists today.
