For anyone interested about the claim I made about Somalia's economy growing at 30% in 1975.

Here is the link data.

With the exception of 1974 due to the drought, Somalia under Said Barre was growing at a record breaking pace unmatched in modern history. Prior to 1977 Said Barre was developing the country at record breaking pace. In 1975 the Somali economy was growing at 30%, highest recorded.

I agree barre was power drunk and dealt with rebellions ruthlessly but the guy was a wadani. Don't take that away from him. All the guys who wanted to replace him were nowhere close to his nationalism

And then the GDP took a nose dive in 1976 :mjlol:

Even looking at the chart you posted, for every large gain in GDP there was a just a large dip that followed.

The kacaan were horrible at econonic planning :icon lol:

Took a nose dive during the 77' war thanks to Cuban/ Soviet betrayal

Look at the chart it GDP was -1% in 1976 which means the country was in a recession.

If you look at most other countries you will see annual GDP growth rising gradually. Not the erratic spikes that you see under the Barre regime.

How was Somalia any better than other dirt-poor subsaharan countries?

The Kacaan's economic policy was a joke, it relied on handouts from superpowers and when that was cut, it stopped being able to sustain itself.

From Pella to Pattala, then back to Babylon
So what? we were pretty much being spoon fed by the Soviets, up until the Ogaden War, after that, it was the US.

We used to sail thousands of ships across the Indian Ocean, to the Middle East, India, China, Europe and other parts of Africa, in search of commerce. In commerce, we work together as Somalis. To get the best prices and to help each other when in need. And what do you think, was that system successful or not? Of course, if we were able to compete against naval superpowers like the Portuguese as well as mining gold in Mozambique, then surely we were successful. So when you do business in the east or the west, do you do it as a Darood, Hawiye or Dir, etc? Why do you think the Ethiopians and Kenyans try to undermine us? Because you're Darood, Hawiye or Dir? No, the Ethiopians and Kenyans want to cripple us because we are Somali. Free Somali. The Ethiopians can't stand the fact that we have a coastline. It scares them. A lot of people have died at the hands of Ethiopia and Kenya. Was that Darood, Hawiye or Dir blood? No. That was Somali blood. This is our blood. This is our land. Land that we have occupied for thousands of years. A land where we each earn our fortune by rolling up our sleeves in the villages, in the towns, in the cities, in the ports and on the land. Our freedom is only secured when we are willing to come together and fight to protect each other. That is the bond that keeps the star together on our beautiful flag. That is the bond!

We are a nation of merchants, we must revive that spirit, if Somalia is to truly succeed.

Somalia can be a great nation again but all depends on its people.

Someone has to write a book:
