Pakistanis do want to be Arabs though, as do Sunni Afghans, Indians and Bengalis. You know who don't and even look down on Arabs? Turks. Turkey >> most of these Arab countries and combine with that hyper nationalism. Wallahi most of these people who are calacaling about Islam, if their own forefathers whom they claim they are honouring saw them saying this stuff, they would disown them, at best. Those days Somalis were far from.being religious but we're extremely fanatical. They might not pray or fast much but anybody who said anything about Islam would have paid. That's how the early Somalis were.
Most of Somali known history is Islamic. The Awdal Empire was Islamic, Ifat was Islamic, Ajuuran was Islamic, Harar was Islamic. The platform of Somali nationalism was Islamic which was counter to the Christian Abyssinian enemy. The Somalis used to praise the Prophet in every single Somali poem ever written. The Ottoman soldiers are buried alongside Somalis who fought alongside the Somalis.
Islam isn't Arab. From the 3rd century AH onwards it was the Turks that took control and were leading the Muslims. Most of the rulers during the Abbasid period were non Arabs when the Caliph became nothing but symbolic. The Mamluk Empire was non Arab. The Ottomans were non Arab. The largest Muslim country Indonesia is non Arab. Arabs make up less than 20% of all Muslims.
I find it really interesting that those prompting Atheism are the least tolerant people in most of these posts. They claim Somalinimo but have gone against the primary bond among all Somalis which is their Religion. This is clearly a smokescreen. What they have issue with is not us "losing our dhaqan" but the deen itself and our people becoming increasingly more observant of it. We all know how women in pre-civil war Somalia were dressing was in conflict with the requirements of the hijab which, by the way, were revealed in the Qur'an and outlined 1400+ years ago, not after the civil war.
If it was really about preserving our dhaqan why don't they also complain about jeans/trousers, shirts, suits and other Western clothing that many Somalis wear today? Are they not also replacing our cultural clothing?
But hey, they cry in vain. Alhamdulillah the majority of Somalis are proud Muslims.

"Islam comes first" and "deen over dhaqan" is a recurring theme in this thread which makes you wonder what it is about this religion which makes it necessary that it stands tall above the rest of society.
Is it that:
It subjugates women to the point where they're treated like a child (can't travel long distances on their own without a guardian, testimony half that a mans etc)
It stoltifies and starves any free inquiry which comes at it's expense
It labels and subsequently judges people based off of ideology rather than individuality
It promises bountiful rewards and pleasure whilst at the same time promising punishments (which would make even Hitler blush) to those who you've been taught to hate.
Regarding the last point if something seems too good to be true it probably is too good to be true. Especially if you haven't been given a sample of what you've been promised.
