Good points. All my hindi/chinese/arab friends used to go to all sorts of after'school clubs such as martial arts, swimming etc as well as classes where they learnt their language and culture. They even used to get GCSEs in their language from those classes. We Somalis didn't have any of that. It comes as no surprise most of us ended up as criminals while they succeeded.

Btw, the qamiis and koofiyad is our culture now. We appropriated it.

Good point, there is a reason why Indians stay so connected to their heritage and rarely marry out even if they stay in different countries for hundreds of years. Somalis get lost very easily, it's alarming how many have already married our or are involved in low-life lifestyles.

It's not simple wallahi....I grew up in governmental housing projects and I've lost my older brother to gang violence, he was involved. I have many childhood friends who were involved in illegal activities, shit I've dabbled in it too.

It's simple exposure by proximity. It's accessible, it's close by and it's something that is celebrated due to dysfunction that is promoted consistently in the media that is consumed by the youth.

Most the people I grew up with in that neighbourhood, turned out mashallah. A few have lost their lives and other have/are spent/spending years in prison and will be crippled by a dirty record.


I'm a school teacher atm, all my siblings except the youngest are working professionals. 6 out 7 of the kids my parents raised turned out mashallah. And when I look back at it, it's a strong male role model that makes the biggest difference imo.

My abo is an educated man, and consistently been telling me since I was a kid, my goal should be to surpass all his accomplishments if not I've failed. He's made plenty efforts in tutoring me and my siblings, teaching us about the deen, our culture and history. We had our paternal ayeyo living with us too and it was great.

My older brother had the same exposures as well, however, his outcome was very different. Was it due to my parents failure? I doubt it.

No, you can find other ways of making income. Turn to Allah before you end up serving life. Even going back to Somalia, getting funding from your parents and starting your own business would become barakah. This is sisterly advice. I am rooting for you!

Can i just say the different communities you've highlighted have a strangle hold on nearly all decent jobs. I used to be a temp worker for a prestigious organisation and normally you have to complete 3 months of probation before given the permanent position. So, after 3 months of grinding my ass off i was reinterviewed and they told me it was only a formality and on the same day i saw some other indian guy going into the interview who looked like the cousin of one of my collegues. 2 weeks later, i was told theyd give me an amazing reference but they found someone more slightly more experience but that my work so far had been good.

On another occasion, i was at a firm for like 6months or so and some new temp guy came (asian)... helped him out showed him the work i do... and found out that he stayed late every freaking day till like 9 or something asslicking the managers. After the 1 year review they said theyd let me go with a decent bonus(buyout my 4weeks notice period) and redundancies happen. The manager guy firing me spoke about himself for like 25minutes and then was like oh your being let go casually.

Mind you ive moved up ranks contracting quite quickly in a 3 year period so i can just apply and i can probably land loads of interviews in a week or so. The barriers for somali guys after university is unreal, even if you have graduated from a top university and have tons of internships. Got to know how to play the social game big time and get yourself a big backer in your firm and its smooth sailing, otherwise youll be jumping from job to job.

Facts, I heard about how Somali guys are discriminated against by Indians during the job interview process but Somalis need to start forming organisations and hooking each other up. Anytime a Somali gets a job in a good firm, find ways to bring others in until we have enough people that can make a difference. Each one, reach out to one!

Yes and we need to do the same for our kind. Once you are successful, help other young Somalis to climb the ladder.

Another important thing is the amount of freedom given to Somali kids, especially boys. All my ajnabi friends were either picked up from school or had to he home within an hour of school finishing. If not, they would get it. And they would only be allowed out to see friends on the weekend for a few hours pre-arranged and OK'd by the parents. Somali boys on the other hand, you would find them still messing about outside till 8-9pm wearing the school uniform. That's where the exposure happens. That's how they get involved.

We once had a crisis meeting in our local Somali community to discuss this issue. A local Somali teacher who has seen it all gave some solid advice. She said take your kids to school and then pick them up afterwards. It is before school and afterwards that kids get exposed to this lifestyle. If you shut that door, your kids will be safe.

Somali boys in the West need strong Somali oriented after-school programs to distract them from getting caught up in ghetto lifestyles. Since Somalis are naturally gifted at poetry and comedy, many would excel in programs that would encourage the development of these skills. We also need Somali traditional games and martial arts to be taught. The reason why most Somali girls are less drawn to ghetto lifestyles is because they're socialised to spend more time at home and also, they are drawn to Somali music/dance because of the wedding culture.

Somali boys in the West don't even wear Somali traditional clothes at their own weddings, instead they wear a Khamiis and an Omani hat as if they just flew in from Muscat.

We need NGO's that revive Somali traditional culture or we will see more and more Somali boys sagging their pants and preparing to be someone's girlfriend in prison.

Exactly it’s due to proximity and other variables (single household, financial issue)
Even the asians, whites, hispanics who live in these zones have the same issues when it comes to gang culture.

Also, the ghettos near me have a very close nit community. Whenever I drive past their there always something going on. Everyone seem to know each other but at the same time there a police sirens heading there nearly on a weekly basis, to the point I'm used to it now.

I'm living good now in my early 20s my family is financially stable and all my older brothers have undergraduate degrees. I lived both lives so I know how it goes, you got no empathy for people keep talking. If you were raised on my old block and you were a male you would have died at 14/15. I'm eye witness I have seen a lot of shit, I hate internet talkers.

I grew up in the Ghetto and I have male relatives who were caught up and served time, guess what? Most of them did and do have a choice but they were stubborn and chose the streets. Now they have criminal records and regrets.

They all seem to have male siblings who ended up doing well, being a hoodlum in the UK is a choice, nobody holds a gun to your head and forces you to join a gang in the UK!

Nobody is at risk of being homeless. There is always another choice.

Death is unfortunate, I am not talking about victims of crime, I am talking about Somali boys who choose the criminal lifestyle and hurt others, mostly their families.

I feel bad for every innocent Somali who died at the hands of a criminal as I feel sorry for any person who was robbed by these thugs who steal deets.
