Nobody really cares whether you wear a hijab or not. During the winter, you’ll need to make sure you have access to a good and reliable car and wear warm clothing. It’s extremely hot in the summer too. If you are working, going to school or generally just productive then you won’t even notice the gossip. It’s like Toronto. Adiga uun dadaal.

1. How would people react to someone who is not a hijabie? I also like to wear “Western” clothing, so jeans and even shorts. Basically the opposite of regular Somali attire.

you'll get judged a little but nobody cares

2. Do people make fun of your lack of Somali language fluency? I remember all the little kids in Somaliland would joke around about our lack of language skills lol.

not really

2. Tips for dealing with the weather? I have no idea how to navigate through snow.

snow is life

Sis, you do NOT want to live in Minnesota.

Somalis there will gossip about you for simply not wearing hijab, and spread bad rumors about your hooyo/family because of that. Here in Toronto we already have Somalis gossiping about other families and girls 24/7, and it's much worse than Minnesota. So many of my relatives live in MN, and they told us a lot. It's even colder than Toronto lmao

I suggest you tell your family about the toxic people in MN, and how life is much better in Cali. I would honestly rather live somewhere with no somalis than majority Somalis that talk shit about me 24/7.

Somalis gossip on another level wallahi. That’s why I was a little skeptical about some people here saying that people wouldn’t care about non-hijabies when we’ve got stricter dress codes than Arabs, Afghans, and Iranians in the West and even the Middle East in some cases.
:ayaanswag:
Unfortunately my parents have most likely made up their mind, so it seems like we’re definitely leaving LA soon.
:meleshame:
I do have one thing that I’m worried about though. Will people be outwardly hostile to someone not wearing the hijab? Of course I’d hate to be the subject of gossip behind my back, but I think it’d also be hard to deal with someone being rude to me for dressing the way that I want.

My family may move to Minnesota soon, and I’d like to ask a few questions before I go.

I have never lived around a big Somali community other than the time I went to Hargeisa as a kid, so I have no real idea of how Somalis are.

1. How would people react to someone who is not a hijabie? I also like to wear “Western” clothing, so jeans and even shorts. Basically the opposite of regular Somali attire.

2. Do people make fun of your lack of Somali language fluency? I remember all the little kids in Somaliland would joke around about our lack of language skills lol.

These are all serious questions, so please no derailing. Thanks.

Your relatives suffer in Minnesota because they are Hawiye. Tell them that they need to stop being Hawiye.

is good to live in a majority somali state. And theres barely any black people just surrounded by white and somalis.

Minneapolis is 18.6 % black actually. But the Somalis there hardly socialise or mix with them that much. They live in the north side of Minneapolis which is majority black.

I'm sure the whites are thrilled that you are all moving in next door. Its a real loss for the black areas.
