According to science, polygamy only comes about during the advent of agriculture and private property. Once men enter agricultural way of living and start the concept of private property and with that warring over property did humans start having multiple wives.
Why? What’s weird about that. Once humans start to live in an agricultural way of life, you find that many women were sharing one man. Apparently, there was mass violence during that period and for the first time many women were left without partners. Also, society became rather greedy with certain men amassing more men. That is where the origins of polygamy stems from.

Would it be a case of majority of men being forced with celibacy or was society very violent? I think they always desired more women they just didn't have the environment to practice their desire
lets be honest no man wants just one women but they don't have the energy or ability to get multiple woman so they are stuck with one, if the society normalised it they would gp ahead with it straight away, for now they are forced to monogamy (usually for their own good) and just do stuff on the side

I don't think angelina was saying men aren't polgynous by nature she is just pointing out that most men will be monogamous in their life and thats just the way life works so men acting like they have a right to do polgyny is stupid since most men have been monogamous and fine

it had nothing to do with vegetables and everything to do with private property. Once men started to amass wealth for themselves, men started to fight intensively for resources which resulted in deaths of young men, some men being too poor and women having no choice but to be with the most wealthiest.
It is for that reason the Ancient Romans banned polygamous marriages. The west believes in monogamous marriages not because of Christianity but because Romans banning due to fears of rebellious men and violence.

You do get a lot of men who have means to be polygamous but are staunchly monogamous though. You see it throughout history. I think men are both monogamous and polygamous.
How polygamous would men be if their was no rich and poor and no wars? Probably not. In order for polygamy to thrive there needs to be an underclass of men and women who are wholly dependent on men’s wealth.
Why?
Islam recognizes that men can be both polygamous and monogamous. Also, Islam at the time was the only religion that limited men’s polygamy and added restrictions.
