To be honest I have no idea. It seems like the expansion is not going to start this year. I just quit my post due to not having enough time. I'm currently in galkayo helping my uncle set up his new business. I haven't been to bosaso for almost 5 weeks now.

Garacad port will be Somalia's largest and deepest port. It will be able to hold 2 big ships and 8 boats at a time. It will also receive containers.

Port depths across the country:

Bosaso: 6.7 m
Mogadishu: 9 m
Kismayo: 9 m
Berbera: 10-11 m
Garacad: 11.5 m​

This is made possible because of Garacad's ideal spot. The rocks needed to make the port are only 1 km away. It also has natural depth so underwater digging won't be necessary. Because of massive cost saving advantages like this, Garacad will be Somalia's least expensive port.

So far 3 phases have been completed. We are on phase 4 which is when they start constructing in the water.

The Gara'ad port project committee rewarded a contract to Turkish based construction company ASD Group to finish the next phase of constructing Gara'ad Port. The esteemed elder of Mudug region Islaan Bashir, who presides over the committee, signed the contract in Ankara

We have been trying to get a port since the 1960s and it is with his hard work that those days of trying have finally come to an end. I would have no one else sign this contract for us. This makes any port in Hobyo unlikely. It also means that eastern K5 will divert much of their export/import business to Garacad instead of Berbera. OWhat we need though is to talk to the Ethiopians about building a road from Kebri Dahare to Warder and on to Goldogob.

We are talking about livestock exports. Xamar does not export livestock (barely). Livestock exports from Garacad to places like eastern Saudi Arabia, Oman and UAE will be very competitive with Berbera. Every port in Somalia wants a piece of the livestock action and Berbera will continue to shed its stronghold.
