Why are Newcastle United so popular in Mogadishu, Somalia?

Good evening (afternoon/morning).

I am very, very surprised by the amount of young people that I have seen wearing Newcaste United football (soccer) shirts in Mogadishu. I NEVER expected to see one so, I was pleasantly surprised and it's also quite proud as a Geordie and a life long Newcastle United fan.

Is this just a local trend in Mogadishu or are the Toons actually popular here in Somalia?

Thanks for your responses in advance.

P.s. Considering that Somalia has never qualified for the World Cup or the Africa Cup of Nations, the standard of football in the country is remarkably high.

I've never heard of a large Newcastle following in Muqdisho, but how have you found living in Mogadishu? And how did you end up working in Somalia?

AS supports Arsenal so it’s a way to show the police you aren’t a threat

I’ve been in Mogadishu for the past two weeks, so I haven’t had the chance to see much of the city or the rest of Somalia yet. Overall, it has been a truly eye-opening and pleasant experience. I’ll be here until the end of January, which should give me plenty of time to explore more of Mogadishu and, hopefully, other parts of the country as well.

As for how I ended up working in Mogadishu. I work for an international NGO, and one of my colleagues informed me about a temporary position here. Before applying, I spoke with a few of my Somali friends to learn more about what it’s like and to ask whether it would be safe for me (with all due respect, Mogadishu doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to safety). They all gave me very positive feedback, so I decided to apply, and I was fortunate enough to be offered the position. There isn’t much more to it, to be honest.
