Dams, Water and Drainage Infrastructure Thread

The dam just north of Hargeisa has been built, and it's already full Mashallah. Never seen a project at this level in the field of agriculture and environmental development, this is huge for the local farm communities at GeedDeeble and other degmos North of Hargeisa, its also should be a inspiration for more dams to be constructed throughout other towns since Somaliland is filled with dooxs, togdheer, tog wajaale, dooxa agamsah etc...

Hopefully this means the controlled water will flow longer until the next rains.

Please don't accuse me of hating development, progress or anything of that sort. I pray that there are more projects like these to help the misaakeen people back home who are facing droughts and water shortages.

These dams are just reinforced rubble cement walls built on seasonal river beds. There are literally hundreds of these in other semi-arid regions such as Eastern Kenya which the locals themselves build on their own:

200 of these could be built in a single year, and it wouldn't cost more $20 million dollars. So why does a President need to come for an "inauguration" when just a single one that doesn't cost more than $50,000 is built? Surely with the hundreds of millions that Somaliland makes, a $50,000 project in 26 years shouldn't be seen as an achievement?

Sand dams are not what we're talking about sxb, plus this doox at Xumboweyne is one of the main dooxs that unite at a place not far from Ceel Sheikh where they meet the red sea.

Someone on somnet a while back drew on google maps and showed that there are many areas where the water flows through the mountains and ends up in the sea. From bulaxaar to xiis.

Waseem, the eng. behind the dam of Xumboweyne said that there are over 150 places or so which could use a dam like this.

With droughts, the problem isn't the lack of water, it's the lack of access to water. Sanaag is very blessed mashallah, HY lands are filled with barawaaqo, but when you look at the harti in sool, or the dir in salal, it's a different story.

We need to look at how we can transport the water effectively, from one part of the coutnry to another.

Sand dams are better in places like Somalia, most of the water in Xumboweyne will be lost due to evaporation. With sand dams, you don't have to worry about that or any water-bourne diseases. Was only mentioning sand dams because they are the most cost-effective form of rainwater harvesting in semi arid dry lands.

We need damns in Arabsiyo.I have seen multiple times valleys there being filled.Arabsiyo could probably produce a lot more produce than it currently does if we had a dam buil there

It won't evaporate the water will not be stagnate it will absorb beneath the soil, they didn't cement the river floor sxb, they just built a dam to contain the speed of the floodwater, same concept of the sand dam but bigger.

Arabsiyo has the potential to become the breadbasket of all towns West of Hargeisa, or even east, I've seen the potential, and everyone has a farm there, when harvest came last year children were climbing over fences into Mango farms to steal mangos during Ramadan it was funny as hell to see them chased with mangos falling out their pockets.

How will the water be extracted?

Somalilandsun-The ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the Water Technology Institute was held today in Hargeisa. The event marks the start of the construction of the renewed Water Technology Institute. The project is implemented by the Somaliland Ministry of Water Resources and is funded by the Somaliland Development Fund (SDF).

The institute, which provides short term vocational trainings, currently consists of one work shop and two small rooms. The Ministry will construct a one-story building and four classrooms. After completion of the construction, it is expected that the institute can admit more students in a regular way and provide a more advanced level of training.

The launching ceremony was presided over by Hussein Abdi Boos, Minister of Water Resources, and attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Water Resources and officials from the SDF Secretariat.

Mohamed Farah, Project Manager of Water Resources Development Project funded by SDF, explained about the aims of the project and he emphasized role of Director General in the planning and the planning to find national water technology institute. Anthony Njue, SDF fund manager/leader expressed how is happy about the current stage of project implementation. He mentioned expected outcomes of the Water Technology Institute of Ministry of Water Resources to produce water technician that will make sure quantity and quality of water of water for Somalilanders to live in longer lives.

While speaking at the launching event, the Minister of Water Resources applauded the donors for their contribution to the development of Somaliland: “I am delighted to witness the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the Water Technology Institute in Hargeisa. This is the result of the joint effort of the Ministry of Water Resources and the donor community, through the SDF, whom we are very thankful to. This institute, when fully functional, will contribute major benefits to the project implementation. The students graduated from the institute will be operating at different sites where boreholes and water supply systems are located. The graduates will be able to handle efficiently any technical problems occurring in these different locations, thereby reducing downtime of the systems and reducing the frequency with which we have to send engineers from Hargeisa. Students from this institute will be well educated and well equipped to continue their duties in an effective way. From now on, each year, four batches of students will be graduating from the institute while previously only two groups graduated per year.”

Other water project activities implemented by the Ministry of Water and funded by the SDF in Somaliland include:

1. Development of a 25-year water supply master plan for Berbera (Sahil region)

2. Expansion of Burco urban water supply system (Togdheer region)

3. Comprehensive water study, entailed design and drilling exploration boreholes for Lasanood urban water supply system (Sool region)

4. Drilling of a borehole and construction of Hadaaftimo water supply system (Sanaag region)

5. Drilling of a borehole and construction of mini water supply system in Gargoorey (Awdal region)

6. Detailed design for Elafwein water supply system (Sanaag region)

7. Technical feasibility study, detailed design and construction of two dams in Fiqifuliye and Kulaal villages (Sanaag region)

8. Detailed design and procurement of water distribution system supplies for Borama town

9. Capacity building programme for the MoWR (at different levels)

Mashallah. The NWTI will be training local students in areas of vital importance (water infrastructure) hence there will be less reliance on ajnabi technicians:

Most of the miniscule (boreholes) Water projects are outside the regions of MaroodiJeex and Togdheer regions.

The big water projects like the Water Development plans are in Saahil and Toghdheer. Also this does not entail all the Development plants which SDF contributes too. Just the Water Development
