Would you be willing to take your husband's surname?

I know one Somali woman who took her husband's last name and he is Somali. They are in their 20s.

It's becoming less common among westerners because of feminism. Back then, you had to take your husband's last name or your marriage wouldn't be recognized, especially among Catholics.

I think it will soon be a thing where Somali kids in the West take their mother and father's last name and hyphenate it like the Latinos do.

Islamically you cannot change your last name. The children follow the father. A nickname like bah (reserved for one of many wives) is a different story.

Walaal, what does that have to do with a wife changing her last name to her husbands? Waa xaram. As much as you guys like to say naag qabiil ma leh it simply isn’t true because the wife is not supposed to take on her husbands name. She keeps herself independent by not changing her name and keeping her own wealth. An association with a qabiil has nothing to do with changing last names. In fact, in Somali culture some tribes try to grandfather themselves in but they are shunned as sheegaad. The women may be differentiated by bah or known as the wife of so and so but islamically a wife cannot change her last name. Dhaqan wise it’s the same.
