Why Socrates Hated Democracy

Forever my favourite video on the internet. I’ve always been an avid critic of democracy but it’s hard to voice my opinion in a country that glorifies and romanticises democracy.

In short, democracy is rule by the mob, who believe that voting is their right instead of a responsibility and decide based on their whims and personal desires, one of which is to drain the national treasury (i.e. welfare). Democracy is solely responsible for the political instability in the West. The video explains these points and others, so go watch it.

What do you guys think? And is there a better alternative to democracy?

Ancient Greek philosophers were weirdos into pederasty, slavery, oligarchy and all kinds of weird stuff. I don't respect their opinions. Post-Enlightenment philosophers were much better.

Yeah they were a weird bunch, but most of their ideas are still relevant to us even in the 21st century.

But what do you think about democracy? Answer the question boy! :wowsweat:

Democracy is the white man's Achilles heel (lol, another Greek reference).

Democracy is the best of all the other bad systems. They all suck IMO.

You being an avid critic puts a smile on my face for some strange reason.

Democracy doesn't work on low iq needs like Somalians. They only understand force
Somalis definitely need a strong dictatorship. They don’t know what’s good for them and are extremely lazy. It’s funny, because I can imagine Somalia prospering and thriving in a dictatorship as opposed to a democracy.

Look at Somalia when we had a dictator. Women and men had equal rights and opportunities. People were willing to leave their cities and head to baadiyo and educate others.
In order to fix this mess we need a dictator who isn’t corrupt and actually cares about the people (and not clan related bullshit)

Lol why? I’m a critical person :icon lol:
In school, we are force-fed how great democracy is and then we learn about socialism, communism, anarchism and so on. They mention all the bad parts about those ideologies, but the teachers never criticise democracy. I don't know, it's kind of weird hearing people criticise democracy. And being avid at that:icon lol:

You know what's strange? That we have all these institutions for higher learning, but we haven't produced even one good viable alternative to democracy. It's so weird. I mean, we have all these intellectuals and they could make things so efficient and better. But then I remembered. Even though things seem modern, the people at the top, the rich ones, don't benefit from a better system. Just like capitalism, we can improve it, but it would change the game, and the winners don't want to change their strategy when they have all the good cards in this setting.

People have this traumatic experience with previous ideologies and all this propaganda through the years have made people afraid to even question or seek change in fear of repeating the past.

Exactly. Farmajo is a good man with good intentions but he is too soft. People trample all over him. We need a tougher version of him, a benevolent dictator of sorts.

Interesting. And yes, I was taught the wonders of democracy at school as well and how the West is so blessed to have it, but my parents have always told me the downsides of democracy. My mum especially is a strong critic of it. Me and my parents always debate on this topic, and the fact that an Ancient Greek philosopher has the same criticism as us was nice to read about. Schools romanticise philosophers and worship Socrates as the father of philosophy but they somehow coincidentally forgot to tell us how much he hated their belvoded democracy.

A wake up call for me was the Brexit referendum. I was so shocked at the result, I just couldn’t believe that people would believe the obvious propaganda and lies of the Leave campaign and actively vote against their strongest friends, neighbours and allies. I have always criticised democracy before the referendum, but began to actively hate it soon after.
