My parents like most somalis never put any effort in teaching me somali. By my teens I spoke very limited somali. Luckily I had friends who were fluent and it inspired me to learn and as we spoke somali most of the time. naturally my Somali improved a lot. But without language its easy to lose connection to your people. language is what connects us

What are you talking about? Most Somali parents cringe at the thought of their kids being unable to speak Somali.

Oddly enough I've met ppl that speak/understand very limited Somali and their parents don't speak English.

how can you not know your own mother tongue?

Most somalis understand the language but some of the diaspora ones struggle with speaking fluently and will mix somali with their host language i.e english, when they try to speak somali.
