My theory is that they are trying to protect their family back home and avoid punishment themselves in the diaspora/when returning. I know an Eritrean who recently came back from vacation from Eritrea and I wondered why/how he did that when he fled the country. From what I read, the government apparently is very bothered by people who leave the country. The guy showed me a video of the president and was commenting on how well spoken and great of an African leader he is. But he would immediately change the subject about Eritrean politics or any dirty laundry, including these violence incidents happening. Even news articles don't explain who is fighting who. @seldiboy, is it in Eritrean culture for people to be secretive to outsiders?

Politics is taboo and it’s taboo to broadcast any ceeb. A lot of people have also become defeatist when it comes to clearing up details about incidents like Tel Aviv since the prevailing narrative being pushed by bad actors has become so dominant that its pointless.

Even the basic details have been fudged. It’s not opposition vs pro gov but rather opposition vs those opposed to the opposition

Church? You mean the State of Eritrea.

You pay 2% (20% would be ludicrous) to the Eri Govt as a remittance tax if you are a citizen of Eritrea. This wouldn’t apply to diaspora kids who are born abroad unless they opt in to Eritrean citizenship.

If you don’t pay this remittance tax, you can certainly still visit Eritrea but certain services will be off limits (eg. any imports you try getting into Eri won’t pass customs, some non-essential consular services will require remittances to have been paid)

Compare to Somalia, DJibouti, Ethiopia, and Sudan, Eritrea is doing fine. They have peace, stable political system, and national development projects which are being accomplished far more than the most Sub-Saharan African nations. Of course poor people like to migrate and find opportunities elsewhere, but when you look at human development indexes, Eritrea is one of the nations in Africa who are doing better than the most.

They have yet to catch to with Kenya and Tanzania though. But to do that, the country needs a slow and gradual political reform.
