Hobyo port progress

I guess Guaranteeing the safety of the President of Somalia which is 100x more valuable to any Port is immature right.

We are hosting safely Somalia's President in our capital for almost 3 months now without any Alshabaab or AMISOM presence and you are talking about holding a Port safe?
You guys are @Abaq kabo qaad, we Marehan made a mistake making Aliance with you. If you stuck with Marehan in Kismaayo today you wouldn't be complaining about Cumar Mohamud.

Alliance kulaha, waryaa hold your own nuts in Kismaayo, HGs are not going to safe you again from ogadens.

P,s stop ruining this Hobyo thread, if you want HGs to restart JVA.2 alliance so we can rescue you again from ogadens in Jubaland than start another thread for us.

Probably the idea is to connect this northern Hobyo port to Galkayo. So it’ll be about to use the planned link to Ethiopia

A straight road from a point 34km north of Hobyo to Galkacyo is 190km and can be expected to cost at least $190 million. A straight road from Garacad to Galdogob will cost, at bare minimum, $260 million. If the FGS decided to build the Garacad-Galdogob road, and forks a branch from Galkacyo to Hobyo port, the lowest possible price for that is $450 million. Even at 0% interest from the WB and AFDB, that is a huge price tag.

Also having Hobyo port’s connection to Ethiopia run through Puntland negates the whole point of building the port if it is a political project.

All the support we got from HG was the Xamar port, no footsoldiers, we have plenty of men in Gedo.

LOOOL

Forget the political ramifications, most of the tax revenue from Hobyo's fishing jetty would end up in Puntland's hands, thus negating the point of having Hobyo port to begin with. Not to mention fuel, the money spent by drivers on their stops etc etc.

Then they would have to stop at Turdibi dry port to travel to DDSI.

I hope they do this, it is hilarious

Cross border taxes are a lot cheaper than goods taxes at ports. Regardless most of the trade will be South Somalia. Garacad road to Ethiopia won’t be funded by FGS/World Bank as long as PL-FGS are in political stalemate

If they build the port at Mareeg and connect it to the road at Bulo Barde and a customs at Feerfeer, costs could be lower. Hobyo has a steeper hill to climb due to the existance of Garacad so nearby. They are just too close.

@bidenkulaha

they've been doing photo op's for this port the past 10 years, will it actually ever be built, any timeline? Also for it to be worth it the port has to be bigger than garcad/bossaso. Any idea how big it's supposed to be? Also a port is serious money, if FGS gets a loan they gotta pay a certain percentage of the port.
2.5 years. 1 year to build enough of the port to unload the first cargo ship, which will then be used to construct the rest of the project.

This is different to previous attempts as it’s not going to be in Hobyo City which doesn’t have the benefits of a deep sea+harder rock. Should be a lot quicker. Also it’s a community project, not relying on foreign nations.

It makes no sense to go from Hobyo to Galkacyo to Galdogob, they have to either connect it Hobyo to Caabuudwaaq or Mareeg to Balanbale/Feerfeer/Matabaan.

Galkayo is going to be connected to Hobyo port eventually. It would be weird Sacad to build a port and not build it to their city

good, we need a HG port regardless, we can stop all shipments from garcad/bosasso to the south since it would go through HG lands, and have people use Hobyo. We got to have it done soon tho, no more talk action is needed.

How much will this cost and what’s the split between external funding and money risen by private investors?

No one cares about southern Somalia, Mogadishu and Kismayo are not at full capacity. The reason these new ports are being built is to supply the Somali region and eastern Oromia. That’s where the money is.

The FGS & Puntland will come to an agreement this year or early 2024. The problem facing Hobyo port is one of economic viability, that is a permanent obstacle.

HG understandably want to have the port, road and customs checkpoint inside HG territory. But if you have all of the corridor inside HG territory, it is far less efficient than it could be. Mareeg is a better location from an ROI standpoint for a Galmudug port. It is too bad for HG that Mareeg is majority Abgaal.

Puntland built a port where it would be most economically efficient. Garacad was under consideration for a port since the 1950s. It was not a new idea. Nothing to do with clan or xaasidnimo, these are businessmen trying to make money.

a small port like garcad won't cost much, maybe 15-20 million, but we need a bigger port than that, like 600 meter berth 30-40 million range. private investors as well as private companies like hormuud and finally FGS must all contribute.

If PL and FGS come to agreement, then there’s a good future for Somalia as it’ll be dependent on constitutional agreement which hasn’t been accomplished since 2010. Will show political maturity.

HSM isn’t after the usual ‘let’s agree on aid or IMF projects so we both get IC money’. PL will have to accept the completion of the constitution (subject to referendum) without SL. This means everything we’ve previously failed to agree on such as elections, revenue sharing, ports, custom tariffs etc.

Plus plenty of money to go around. Right now Djibouti has ethiopian market cornered, i think 90% plus goes through them and ethiopia wants to diversify. Djibouti small country but has many ports and electric train system to cut shipping costs and time
