I use to know a Somali girl who called herself atheist but she afterwards told me she really wanted to get back on her salat and deen, so I'm not really counting her.

I think many ex-Muslim Somalis, especially the ones who allegedly discard religion altogether, are in the midst of a phase. Some people sleep around and others join streets gangs; they take perhaps the edgiest route and declare themselves to be proud murtads.


Also, with the rise of depression and other mental illnesses in this new age, many have strayed away and have succumbed to the whisperings of shaytaan. May Allah (swt) help them.

Everyone goes through a spiritual and soul searching phase few times in our lifetime, I myself doubted Allah existence once when I was locked up for a crime I had nothing to do with.

I was so mad and frustrated why god made me go through all that untill my case got dismissed, But I would have been Gaal too if I stayed there longer, people blame God and Islam for something it has nothing to do with faith.

Is it becuase of their proximity to the Vatican?

Italy colonised somalia so it's not that surprising that somalis there are more secular. My mother's side of the family(who live in mainly italy) isn't that religious tbh. My abti was in the italian army and is christian. And his father(my awoowe's brother) has tattoos and was married to a half somali/half italian but is muslim and is becoming more religious (fasting in ramadan).

It’s simple. Why would we tell you, and why would you think to ask?

If it’s a guy, they assume you’re a regular Somali guy. If you’re a girl, they assume you’re a non-Hijabi, or can’t even tell you’re Somali. Unless you disclose otherwise, which again, why even bother? I don’t have any close Somali friends that live in my state. I could honestly go years w/o seeing another Somali outside my family, unless some wedding or death occurs within a family my folks are close to.

Like I said before alcoholism and being gay are the only main reasons Somalis leave Islam.

Yes my former neighbor and his wife, really cool couple that were very welcoming. I ran in to him once and he told me that he suspected his wife was practicing again as she started covering up. You'll be hard pressed to find any that are open about it because if they go against group think, they are automatically shunned and become the talk of the community.

Why put myself in a situation where all my family members disown me and I have the local imam coming to try and pray the 'devil' out of me.

This isn't a phase. I've come to the realization religion is just a clever tool created thousands of years ago to control the masses. A true God would not make himself known to man or intervene in worldly affairs. All three Abrahamic religions worship a interventionist and vindictive God.

The only reason you're Muslim is because you were born to parents who are Muslim. I guarantee you, had you been born Christian, Hindu and so on, you'd be pushing those religions as the truth.
