#Ethiopia's PP had once floated the idea of diverting all its imports via Assab while abandoning the Port of #Djibouti and thereby annuling Djibouti's $4 billion annual revenues. #Eritrea leader told them that Eritrea wouldn't conspire to harm its neighbors.

You can already see what move Ethiopia would have tried here to get the port after having 100% its imports and exports going to assab.

Nonsense. Asaab doesn’t even have basic infrastructure, let alone a functioning train linking it to Addis like Djibouti does. It would take at least 10 years just to redirect all imports there.

Also, Ethiopia doesn’t pay Djibouti $4 billion a year. it’s closer to $1-1.2 billion.

Not saying Afwerki is lying, but Abiy could definitely be bullshitting him.

They might settle for Awdal in the mid-term, but Addis’s main goal will always be Asaab.

This proposal came in 2018

but I raised also the same points you mentioned

But I believe Abiy would have done so if Eritrea agreed. He is not smart.

He tried the same with the Somaliland MOU
