FGM is already saturated topic. It is not as pressing as people think and the health implications is quite limited TBH. FGM doesn't contribute more than 5% of the disease burden of Somalis. More pressing issues are infectious diseases and the overall weak health systems. An even more pressing issues are the underlying factors that contribute to a bad health such as housing, clean water and hygiene. The biggest gain in health was due to a proper sewage system in the west. With just a sewage system, they eliminated dozens of diseases. This suggests that the biggest health gaind are made in domains outside of the health system. In modern times, forbidding smoking can have the same impact as sewage system, this too will eliminated or drastically decrease diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, depression etc etc. I think the Somali equivalent of smoking is khat. Khat is more pressing than FGM imo. Not only from health prospective but also from societal perspective
So I'd suggest that you do continue pursuing your education, but do not go for the low hanging fruit. There are more pressing issues. Since you're in health promotion, do not fight the symptoms, tackle the underlying factors.
