There is no proof that Somalis were converted through any sort of coercion or violence. I wouldn't doubt some internal jihads happened but there was no outside "manipulation" or conquests. The tribal origin myths give one the image of proselytizers (Imams) coming from Arabia and seemingly just succeeding probably because Islam was already similar to Waaqism as both are monotheistic. It likely wasn't that hard to convince Somalis.

Not to mention, Somalis adopted Islam in a syncretic manner meaning many pre-Islamic traditions remained until very recently like trials by fire, a belief in sacred trees, cultural implements like the wagar and folk stories like this which only further tells you how slowly and comfortably Islam was adopted.

In spite of the popular memories of Arab proselytizers the bulk of the conversions was done by other learned Somalis it seems from Urban centers, the lack of Arab elements in rural rural/nomadic culture and Islam seems to suggest that among other things.
