I always wish my parents bought a home. My father AUN became religious towards the end of his life. A terminal cancer prognosis can do that to a man and refused to buy on account of riba. If he hadn’t gotten sick or died I don’t think he would have bought regardless. My paternal uncles who have been in Canada 30+ years are still renters. And not because they cannot afford to buy, they can.

I do agree with those who say Somalis are selectively religious. My father never forced hijab on my mum or us. I never spoke about the deen with us overmuch tbh. Leaving Islam abayoo doesn’t magically change your life overnight and it doesn’t mean because you left Islam your life will get easier.

You’re right, the highway is a complete nightmare but if you want a quiet neighbourhood it’s worth it. It’s a nightmare commute going to work but living in a safer neighbourhood where you own your property is worth it.
