MINNEAPOLIS - Mohamed Ahmed wants you to think he’s perfectly ordinary.

In a lot of ways, he is. He’s a married, middle-aged man with four kids. He dropped out of college. He spends his days managing a gas station in Minneapolis and his nights hounding his kids about homework. He loves the Mall of America and “The Simpsons.”

But then there is the glaring example of how he’s not. The Somali-American Minneapolis resident is trying to stand up to the Islamic State group, often from a cigar shop in St. Paul, armed with only a computer and his ideas.

The shop is where Ahmed, 40, does most of his brainstorming for Average Mohamed, the online campaign he launched four years ago to combat the recruitment efforts of Islamic extremists with bite-size “counternarrative” cartoons he creates and posts on his website and on YouTube.

His work has been covered by news organizations across the country, including USA Today, the New York Times and Huffington Post.

They'll just call him a coconut. That's their term for any Muslim who doesn't see eye to eye with them on line and on the battlefield he'd be an apostate just for doing this interview. Extremists are really...extreme. He should just do dawah to the youth and make fun of takfiris as a side line. They'd get him, Islamwise.

Mashallah, this is an awesome initiative that will give the youth a different healthy narrative.. Inshallah hopefully this will inspire & encourage many to use media as a tool to combat extremist sentiments.

He's clever for discovering that little kids have seen their propaganda. His cartoons will help them feel better and hopefully move on instead of feeling like they're a part of something just by watching propaganda. Really disgusted with a US court for giving an 11 year old a massive sentence whem he stupidly gave those older weirdos advice on how to use bitcoin after they groomed him on twitter. His brain at that age does not understand the full consequences of his actions and they do a shoddy job of giving a counter narrative to miskiin kids who grew up praying for Palestinians and think they've finally found their heroes through ISIS. Ggrrrrr I feel so sorry for kids today too many predators and not enough people who truly get it.

Its crazy to think a 11 year kid would know how to farm bit coins and transfer it into a currency terrorist
could use.

I don't think he was an expert but he gave them pointers and that counted as material support to terrorism. If he was a teenager I'd get it but he's a child.
