Although Islamic militias have been and are funded to fight proxy wars that was never the case in Somalia. The icu was an organic movement which brought stability in the south, their form of government (political islam) was not acceptable in the eyes of the US/Ethiopia and as such allied with local warlords to dislodge them from the region. This of course failed, radicalising the members of the icu into waging an asymmetric war, employing techniques used by al Qaeda/taliban to varying levels of success. It is alleged that core members of the group trained and fought alongside the taliban and various other islamic miltias in the 90s and so were not unfamiliar with their methods.

You’re repeating an oft repeated mantra in anti-western circles, this form of misplaced activism is akin to holding placards on a street, you feel good for a little while but ultimately demoralise yourself and begin to live life through a jaded lens due to the lack of change your actions have brought about.

Al shabab as we know it is finished, they’re surrounded in galgadud, been cleared out of middle shabelle and operations are being planned to clear them out of the jubbas/bay and bakool regions.

If the past years military progress is not enough to remove your cynicism and you feel like you need to “do something”; spread the fact that Ahmed Godane was a know criminal in Hargeisa and before he left, at the height of warlordism in the south, told people he wanted to make as much money as possible there. I’m not going to argue whether or not the icu was good but that it was functional in giving minorities their rights in an era of land grabs, and looting. I laud abdullahi yusuf’s (aun) attempt at rebuilding the nation but it was a false start as no meaningful reconciliation process had taken place amongst the clans and there was no singular vision for the direction the country would go in.

I’m not a qabilliste but anyone can tell you that larger clans are not monolithic - there are competing factions all the way down to 2nd and 3rd cousins on who gets represented in local/regional government. Seeing HG as a cohesive block and then placing collective blame for the actions of part of the group is deceitful and dishonest.
