Why don't Somalis speak Italian

Most of Somalia was a italian colony and you won't here of anyone speacking italy or road signs being Italian or kids being taught Italian but in djibouti it's the opposit

Don’t worry. Northern dialects tend to have more native Somali words.
Our language is safe, for now...

Its because Somali peninsular is unified within a single language, so we didnt have to adopt Italian as working language.

Also Roman-Somali relations is non-existence and the Italian economy is dead, so no point in learning it.

My hooyo learnt Italian when she was living in Xamar in the 70s and 80s, she finishes her phone conversations with a 'ciao' while speaking in Somali.

British SL has english and arabic loan words, Italian Somalia more italian loan words. I use ciao here and there ngl.

Educated 'baby boomer' Somalis (born between 1945 - 1965) know/understand Italian, but it died off with the collapse of the Barre regime and lack of support from Italy.

In Djibouti, they still speak French unfortunately & they even made Arabic official as well lol.

Somali & Afar have a lower status as Native languages than those foreign languages.
