I had no clue about 3, that’s interesting. Yup to number 5 but 9/10 he ends up leaving for a younger woman anyway. Kids cannot keep a man.
I have not really met many Somalis with tons of kids recently. All my uncles and aunts don't have more than four but then again they were all educated overseas.
In Australia, I've seldom seen a Somali with more than five kids. That is probably because most of the community here are relatively integrated compared to their UK and American counterparts.
Even in Somalia, most post-kacaan people have realised that having heaps of kids means more mouths to feed and have a reasonable amount of children.
Personally, I think the stereotype is racist but then again it could be true in other countries.

Honestly, we are a pretty large community by Australian standards. There are around 50k of us, most of which are concentrated in Melbourne. The official number is lower because Australia only counts Somalia-borns as Somali even though most of us were born in Australia.
At least that's what I think. I've never filled out a census before.

a family member told me women in Somalia have lots of kids cause they think it will prevent the guy from leaving. I was broken when I was told that.

men who say they want to remarry to have more children are usually using that as a cover. In my opinion most guys seek out other wives for s**ual reasons and a lack of satisfaction in their current marriages. A lot of them once their wife has children they don't see her as attractive anymore or her body hasn't been the same, so they seek out elsewhere.
Probably other women, but polygamy is a huge practice in Somalia, so I am guessing the women are afraid of losing their husband. I feel really sorry for women back home. Somalis traditionally did not have pensions or anything else, so parents safety net when they get older is their children. I have already seen this in my family as we have started to take care of our familys affairs, for example us children pay rent, groceries and anything else. Our parents will soon quit they jobs as the last of us graduate.
This is the real reason why somalis have kids, your family is your support system. Our parents carried this mentality to the west.

How is having ten kids going to make you money or break even at least. Before you say, when they become successful, remember its harder to have successful children when all your resources is scarcely divided over multiple kids.
Lack of education. Historically it made sense for nomads to have many kids since there was high infant mortality rates and harsh conditions. Somalis came to the west with this caqli and still pop out 5-7 kids.

I don't see this trend continuing among the second generation. They already have smaller family sizes and they give back less in the form of remittance compared to their parents generation. In other words they are less of an asset to the remittance-based economy that partially keeps Somalia afloat. Just imagine the 3rd of 4th generations. It's a scary notion.
