I’ve heard that the first Somali communities in the United States have been in Ohio (esp Cleveland). This begs the question, if the Somali community in America started in Cleveland then why is the Somali capital of America in Minneapolis?
Why did the American diaspora take root in Minnesota and not Ohio?

That is probably where the American immigration institutions placed them first, later that had a cascading effect because when the initial immigrants create social infrastructure for integration, with pre-existing communites and local success, on top of probably some type of integration philosophy that takes the immigrant need in mind, where they probably placed them where their ethnic peoples already existed. Later, there is an effect of Somalis also seeking those places, and the American integration system further did it out of convenience. There is a domestic aggregate gravitation as well; Somalis from other regions move to the closest Somali inhabited hubs.
Somalis are scattered across all 50 states. I was in Orlando, FL last month and the Uber driver that picked me up from the Airport was Somali.
Once the refugees started coming in we got settled in Minnesota, Ohio, California, Georgia and a few other random states.
Minnesota and Ohio grew pretty big communities because somalis purposely moved to those states to live around friends and family.

Columbus Ohio area alone has like 30,000 Somalis & Somali Bantus. Cleveland Ohio is mostly all Somali Bantus not a lot of Somalis live there.
They sponsored the first Somalis that came here after the civil war in the 90s, then more Somalis followed the initial wave and that caused a domino effect
There's a couple of good reasons mentioned in previous replies, but I’d also like to point out one often overlooked reason: the economy. The Twin Cities metro of Minnesota is exceptionally wealthy and has one of the highest standards of living in the U.S., and by extension the world. Naturally, one of the main reasons Somalis flocked to Minnesota was that word spread about the economic opportunities available here.

Yeah Minnesota has an HDI(human development index) equal to places like Japan and Norway as well as a strong economy and excellent healthcare and education. I believe we’re in top 5 most educated states behind a few states in New England. Pretty much any statistic about quality of life and happiness we’re always top 10
The only reason everyone doesn’t flock here is cause of the cold
California salaries with Midwest cost of living. Some of the highest expenditures on public welfare and ranked second in the country for social mobility. Can easily say there's more Somali millionaires here than in any other place. It's truly the land of milk and honey.

Not sure honestly, I don’t think theirs any in the diaspora outside of the USA honestly but I know the United Nations Refugee agency & the US State Department & multiple other agencies were involved, the US government offered resettlement. In the 1990s & early 2000s, Theirs at least like 55,000 Somali Bantus in the USA & 190,000 ethnic Somalis living in the USA.
Bantus are spread out everywhere tho you’ll find them all over the USA except for Minnesota they don’t live there. They have communities in the following states. (Ohio, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, Maine, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, Seattle Washington, California, Arizona) etc
