Because first of all the global ratio between the men and women is very big, there are way many more women in the world than men, so if every man theoretically only had one wife, that would leave a big number of women without a partner, men having multiple wives mathematically decreases that gap.

In the 3rd world there's a lot of women who dont have the opportunity to work, so again if every man only had 1 wife in that society, a lot of women wouldn't have a partner, and they wouldn't be able economically take of themselves, which then would lead them to prostitution, making zina available for married men, and then increasing the chances of STDs in the society as a whole, and also opens up for other prostitution related crimes, such as violence against prostitutes, human trafficking.

Biologically a women can only get pregnant once every 9th months, while a man can impregnate 9 women in one night. So theoretically if a women married 4 husbands, had sex with all 4 of them in one month, and then got pregnant, how would you in a 3rd world country without advanced technology find out whos the father? And even in a developed country would you srs go through the hassle of 4 DNA tests just to find out if you were the father?
While a man can impregnate 9 women in one night, and 9 months later there wouldn't be no confusion, because the children have the same father, with 9 different mothers.
