I agree with some of your points.The eyes do wander but that's the reason why the concept of lowering your gaze was prescribed to us by Allah.

Countless times sheikhs are told,"I no longer have any attraction to my spouse," and the follow up question made by the sheikh is one regarding the lowering of one's gaze.Stuff like this is what ruins marriages and most people don't notice the problem until it's too late.The man or woman doesn't restrict their glance to their spouse alone and they wonder why they loose attraction at the end of the day.

This links up with many other problems overtime.For example,once you lose attraction to your spouse you try to indulge in other acts such as mustarbation to satisfy your urges.

I hope you realize that I'm not tryna judge you or anything.You seem like an open minded person so I think you'll respond to what I have said in a positive way.Hope this benefited you.
