Yep, Dahir Aweys, Indhocadde and Ceeyrow were marching Somalis to the promised land. What a narrative!!! Sheikh Sharif became president and all those religious people (minus the hardcore that became Alshabaab and the Galgaduud clan mafia) who were with sheikh sharif (hundreds of them) joined the parliament, many were nominated ministers and why didn’t they stop attacking them?
unironically yes
The 2006 war in Somalia did not go well either for the United States or Ethiopia. Recently a State Department spokesperson, Donald Yamamoto, admitted that the whole idea was “a big mistake,” obliquely admitting U.S. responsibility for the invasion. It resulted in 20,000 deaths and according to some reports, left up to 2 million Somalis homeless. The 50,000 Ethiopian invasion force, which had expected a cake walk, instead ran into a buzz saw of Somali resistance, got bogged down and soon withdrew with its tail between its legs. The political result of the invasion was predictable: the generally more moderate Union of Islamic Courts was weakened, but it was soon replaced in Somalia by far more radical and militant Islamic groups with a more openly anti-American agenda.

As the situation deteriorated, in an attempt to cover both the U.S. and her own role, Frazer then turned on Zenawi, trying to distance herself from fiasco using an old and tried diplomatic trick: outright lying. Now that the invasion had turned sour, she changed her tune, arguing in the media, that both she and the State Department had tried to hold back the Ethiopians, discouraging them from invading rather than pushing them to attack. The WikiLeaks cable tells quite a different story. In 2009, the Ethiopian forces withdrew, leaving Somalia in a bigger mess and more unstable than when their troops went in three years prior. Seems to be a pattern here?

@tyrannicalmanager

The more moderate group (Sheikh Sharif and co) became the leaders of the country and what happened? Yamamoto is now U.S ambassador to Somalia, ask him now and not quote him when he was State Dept spokesman a dozen years ago.

the extremist in the icu movement were able to gain support and traction because of ethiopian invasion.
alshabaab could never control or take over much of southern somalia if ethiopia never invaded to begin with

@tyrannicalmanager

What would’ve stopped Alshabaab? They finally controlled 85% of the south and more than 90% of Mogadishu? Sooner or later, they would’ve toppled the “more moderate group” in the Islamic Courts Union mentioned in your article. Were Hasan Dahir Aweys, Hasan Turki and xisbul Islam considered as “moderates”?

@tyrannicalmanager

We are both talking of the same period. Were Dahir Aweys, Hassan Turki and their group Hezbul Islam considered as “moderates”?

Why is that called an “invasion” when the Ethiopians were invited by members of the parliament and the government? How is that different from Amisom or when the Ethiopians make incursions into Galgaduud and help the Sufis against Alshabaab or into Hiiraan and help the locals against Alshabaab?

hizbul islam split from al-shabaab in 2012
joined al-shabaab only beccause of foreign intervention

"Meanwhile, the Hizbul Islam group has announced that it is leaving the al-Shabab militant organisation.''
''Hizbul Islam spokesman Mohamed Moalim told the BBC that his group still wanted the African Union mission to leave Somalia but welcomed the new president and parliament as a "positive development".

He said the split was due to long-standing ideological differences, such as his group's opposition to the use of foreign jihadis.

The two forces merged in 2010, following bitter clashes.''

depend what you call "moderate" being a pan-somali nationalist in it self is consider extremist.
do you consider warlords like barre hiraale "moderate"?
mine opinion is that the icu is no more extremist than saudi arabia.

@tyrannicalmanager

warlords are anarchists. They aren’t ideological extremists and in particular a religious one. I asked you about hizbul Islam because their leader Hassan Dahir Aweys has been obsessed for a while in his desire to rule over others while masquerading as the Somali Mahdi or a holly warrior. From Gedo to Puntland, he waged wars on behalf of his Ittihad Al Islami group. Why didn’t he start his campaign from his home region of Galgaduud? When the ICU emerged, he was encouraged by the leadership of Ceeyrow among the Alshabaab militants, but soon after the death of Ceeyrow, he realised that this group had an agenda beyond Somalia while his was based on becoming a religious warlord and ruling all over Somalia on the theme of “Islamic Brotherhood”. They foiled his plan and exposed him as another warlord hiding under the cloak of religion because they were pushing such an agenda as his like harsh Sharia laws that he espoused. This is the sort of character who was leading the Islamic Courts Union. The same person who refused to join sheikh sharif and his government even when he realised that the divergence of him and alshabaab are irreconcilable and wide. He couldn’t fathom someone else ruling the country and not him. The Ethiopians have done a wonderful job in eliminating such a character. They did it in Gedo and again in Mogadishu.

What has Islam done for Somalis? Zilch, nada, we worship our clans and not god or Allah & therefore became the concubine of our two neighbouring Christian countries. Like them, maybe if we became Christians, our I.q would’ve increased and had a chance to shed tribalism and after that, we might have became United as Somalis for the love of Jesus Christ, the father, the son, the saviour and the ever living.

The golden era's for Somalis was when we practiced the deen. We are cleary being punished for above.

Every thing in the past like the history from 200 years ago. Before colonial days. When i was growing up my mother used to tell me stories about the somali history.

The name Somali used to be associated with wealthy, might and warrior's.

Somalis literally destroyed any forgein troops trying to colonise us. The planes made it checkmate for them. And many more awesome history.

Somali history is out there, however you need to be carefull alot of people try to make their own tribe more victorious.

his clan bias or his past doesn't matter to me.
because the icu brought peace and security in southern somalia while ethiopia and fgs brought a weak goverment that can't provide the former even with international aid and foreign troops.
please tell how fgs rule is beter than icu.

It’s the truth, Afghanistan beat Russia at its height, they didn’t have anything we don’t i would like our chances against world powers, 3rd world starving nonuniffied country like Ethiopia would be easy
the reason why soviets lost is because the rebels were using guerilla tactics and had georgrapical advantage.
