So that means every group in Somalia is ethnically somali?I do beleive
Ethnic Somali to mean cushitic somali, Madow,Reer Xamar,Baajun reer Baraawe.
Madowweyne, Baajun Barwani and reer Baraawe have cushitic blood in them and also share somali culture to some extent.
Yes they have lived for close to a millenium apart from the somali Madow who some were brought as slaves. But Somali Madow have somali cushitic blood. So that means every group in Somalia is ethnically somali?
I say we should change our name completely. although I like the name, it's really annoying and stupid. why name a country after an ethnic group. that's like naming Ethiopia "Amharia". it doesnt work. it allows for other groups to claim somali. a white man could be born in Somalia and no one can say he's not SomaliI think the confusion with what is Somali comes from the demonym of Somalia being "Somalis".
Laymans terms: A citizen of Somalia is called Somali but at the same time an ethnic Somali is called Somali.
Either we change the term of which we refer to Somalis to dreaded "Somalian", in order to remove confusion or we stay arguing over what and who is Somali.
Because if Somali citizens are called Somalian, then a cad cad is a Somalian but not Somali. However, if Somali citizens are called Somali, then a bantu is a Somali by definition but not a Somali by practicality.
They are a minority and will remain soI say we should change our name completely. although I like the name, it's really annoying and stupid. why name a country after an ethnic group. that's like naming Ethiopia "Amharia". it doesnt work. it allows for other groups to claim somali. a white man could be born in Somalia and no one can say he's not Somali

maybe it's cause my family is baadiye but I'mThat is a good point but I also want to add this.
Somalia is a melting pot by African standards. The intermarriage Somalis have done within themselves and other ethnicities has made the term "ethnic Somali" ambiguous.
Many, if not most Somalis, have at least one Arab-Somali family member, whether it is an aunt or a distant relative. Many in the south have an cad cad or banjuni or even an Italian relative.
If the definition didn't bother us back then, why now. It's important to look at both sides.
maybe it's cause my family is baadiye but I'mcertain that I don't have any blood-related non-somali relatives.
Ethnic Somalis
Somali bantu
Bajuni’s
Reer Xamari’s/barawani’s
Few Indians
Ethnic Somali is Muslim. And speaks the Somali language and identifies himself as Somali first, no matter what other ethnic background his fore fathers came from.
Yes it's all about self identification. For example as long as they are willing to integrate and contribute, they are ethnic Somalis.
There's no such thing as ethnic Somali.
Ethnicity is a social construct.
Most of us do not have arab relativesThat is a good point but I also want to add this.
