What do you think about Siyad Barre ?

The contradictory aspects of his rule and character came to bite him in the butt and lead the country into the disastrous Ogaden War. For a guy willing to change his religion (allegedly), he should have been able to hold off on Galbeed to not anger the Soviets. Then everything went downhill from there.

The Somali government from 1960-2012 was incompetent.

We had NFD in our hands but then we signed a ceasefire:farole:

Ogaden was in our hands but then we turned on the Soviets.

He also committed genocide onto the Isaaq and other tribes.

He was Somali Hitler.

heck they had the same moustaches. He worked for the Italian fascists.

Before any Somalis post faq.ash memes. Take a think if you even think that it's not sin to mock the dead people. Siyaad was a dictator so stop yh. He put your country into the ashes.

Yes he was Somalia's version of Hitler, a brutal and narcissistic Russian puppet,he even begged the Alt rights Christians in America for weapons to kill his fellow Somalis.

Luckily the amount of cuquubo he committed against Somalis led him to become a refugee in Nigeria and dying in a toilet.

He is a great man. Somalis are an ungrateful bunch. The utter chaos of the last 30 years has vindicated him.
He created the violence idiot.

His racial prejudice killed these innocent people who weren't even in SL at the time.

What is your opinion about him ?

In my point of view somali would not have go to the West.

thanks to this ultimate scumbag.
The majority of Somalis went to the west precisely because Siad Barre was removed from power.
Of course Siad was a dictator and he went after opposition in a brutal way, but most somalis had no need to leave somalia before 1991. The reason why somalis left somalia is because Siad Barre's opposition started killing each other as soon as they conquered Mogadishu.
If I Siad was the problem most somalis would have gone back as soon as he escaped but ya'll still in USA, Canada, Europe, Australia blaming all problems of somalia on a guy who died 25 years ago.

Terrible leader who took power through an illegal coup yet couldn’t develop the country despite taking over every institution. Made the country go from an okay third world country to a fifth world failed state in a few decades.
Anti Siad opposition made somalia a failed state.
Siad died in 1995 and left somalia in the 1992. If siyaad was the problem why is somalia still a failed state 30 years after Siad lost power? If he was the problem then somalia would have recovered by now.
Somalia with Siad Barre 1969-1990 =21 years of stability.
Somalia without Siad Barre 1990-2020 = 30 years of a failed state.
These are facts.

Greatest Somali leader ever. Has no peer. Many tried but none have come close. List of accomplishments

1) The Literacy Campaign
2) Far Somali
3) Drought Relief
4) Universal Healthcare
5) Free Education
6) Only President that has attempted to get back Galbeed. Conquered Ethiopia before the European powers intervened
7) Created Child Support Laws
8) Banned Qabyaalad
9) Nationalized Resources
10) Created all the infrastructure the country uses today in Somalia such as ports, airports, and roads.

Etc.

I agree. Siad Barre struggle to civilised the unruly Somalis. Nobody can manage the chaotic nature and clanism of the Somali. When Barre left in 1992, Somalia nightmare truly began. And 30 years later its still a failed state, because of clanism.

If Siad Barre peacefully stepped down, to an another fellow irredentist, I would have not been a refuge, many would not have been killed and we would heal and strenghten ourselves to liberate our regions again. He was good at the start then became we lost the war, the economy went down, he could not fulfill the needs of the people and rebels group where on the rise, he did not want to step down and from there he killed many people and of course the isaaqs suffered the most losses.

Still no leader today surpasses him in the good he did for the Somali people. He was fearsome, he was strong and he was a international player, he did a lot for cultural heritage, the somali language and culture. I don't believe in the rumors that he was tribalistic, he died with no wealth for himself and his family, he truly was tribalistic then his family would be leaving to the west with a lot of cash like the shah of Iran.

1. He unified the country
2. Made fearful and strong, the strongest military in Africa
3. Protected our culture, language and our heritage
4. Fought to liberate our people in Kenya and Ethiopia, if not for those 15k cubans and 1000 elite soviet Generals we would have taken whole of Ethiopia, but Allah is the one who gives victory to whom he wills.

Today
1. We divided with a 4.5 system and autonomous states
2. Internal fights
3. Al shabaab
4- Amisom and Ethiopians everywhere
5. Number 1 most corrupt country
6. Arabs, Kenyans and Ethiopians benefitting from our disunity
7. 5 million Somalis depended on Aid

And the best Leader we have is Farmaajo and n&n with progress, not much but progress. Again I am acknowledginghis faults and also the good he did even though the faults outweight the good, still no leader today can surpass the good he did.

answers are always going to be either positive or negative, it’s the same with all prominent figures in our history. It should never be a debate but a conversation and we should listen to each other :)
