Very heated discussion impending. I think he was.

Prior to his coup, Siyaad Barre supported a group called the Somali Conference, an Italian-financed group that attempted to extend Italy's trusteeship to thirty years.

As many of you may know, an Egyptian ambassador named Kamaluddin was very instrumental in Somalia's independence as the UN's point man in Somalia during the 1950's. Kamal was very sympathetic towards the SYL and directed Egypt to support the party as well as providing positive assessments of the SYL to the UN Security Council.

However, Kamal is assassinated in Mogadishu under mysterious circumstances. Many considered independence in jeopardy and two men were considered to be at the heart of this betrayal: Siyaad Barre and Zoppe, both influential pro-Italians.

Here is a french source mentioning Barre's participation in pro-Italian activities, actively hindering independence. The first line essentially says Barre was barely a nationalist by any means.

The following excerpts mention Barre's involvement in Kamal's assassination.

These excerpts assert that Barre and Zoppo, the latter of whom was a well known pro-colonialist involved in numerous murky aspects of the trusteeship, were good friends. When the assassination occurred, Barre deliberately impeded the investigation and pitted Nassarist Egypt against the SYL. The excerpt goes onto say that Barre's reputation was tarnished for a longtime because of his actions.

Ask your grandparents about the murder of Kamaluddin and the controversy around it. It is considered one of the biggest mysteries in recent Somali history.

One should not forget the links between Barre and the USSR before his coup.

There is some evidence to suggest that the USSR overthrew the SYL with Barre as their puppet. This theory stems from the SYL choosing the USSR to train the military and the US to train the intelligence and civil services. The USSR believed an American trained civil service and intelligence outfit in Somalia would harm their regional interests as Kenya, Djibouti and Ethiopia were all Western aligned at the time.

This explains Barre's quick rise from being a small player in the 1969 coup to becoming the face of the military regime within months. If you know Somali history, Salaad Gabyere (aka abaaha kacaanka according to Barre) and Jama Ali Korshel were the masterminds. However, by 1972, Korshel, Gabyere and Aynashe were all jailed for treason and the latter two were executed.

Furthermore, Gabeyere was later found out to be a KGB operative, making this theory even more confusing.

Siyaad Barre must be the most vilified person to ever existed that didn’t do what he was accused of. He never killed wadaads, or even attacked waqooyi. He’s done literal nothing Siyaad barre. OP, no he wasn’t to answer your question. Who can prove any of these stuff against Siyaad Barre? He was never a dictator to begin with smh.

As time goes on, Siad Barre will have a favorable view. The thing that set him back was his primitive clansmen, he relied on the wrong people. He figured that out in the end.

Barre and Abtidoon were very similar leaders.

Barre was unsuccessful in extending colonisation. Abtidoon was.

Barre probably killed a political rival in Kamaluddin. Abtidoon was probably involved in Harbi's death.

Both leaders were dictators that tanked their country's economies in their later years.

Difference is Abtidoon knew when to step down.

I honestly believe he was wadani, that car accident messed him up though. He wasn't running the country after that's for sure.

IOG is also responsible of multiple politically motivated assassinations (Borreh, etc)

Interesting stuff.
Sounds like a thriller/novel

Somalia from 1950-1969 would make an excellent movie. A lot of interesting characters, gossip, manoeuvring, shady players, all of which culminated in a general disregarded by his leaders seizing power in a dramatic manner.

If Somalia was still Italian trust territory up until 1980? Our country wouldn't be such a shithole like it is today:drakewow: Italians > Failed state.

IOG had Abtidoon under control towards the end, it was the same case as Tamim and Hamad of Qatar. He didn't step down willy nilly, but IOG was very influential to the point where his power eclipsed the elderly Abitdoon.

I'm uncultured on this subject but it's indeed fascinating.
Worthy of making a movie on this.
