I'm not saying we are exactly the same as other blacks. I'm saying that most people won't notice the difference. The colonialists were fixated with race and would notice even small stuff. If you live in a place where there's a lot of us then obviously people will recognize you as Somali because they are more familiar with the difference, but if you go to a place like Los Angeles or Paris were there's hardly any somalis people will just assume you are black

When it comes to things like race yes it comes down to the area and society you live in, it's not a scientific fact written in stone. In Somalia we aren't black but in America and other western countries we are black because the society sees us as black. This how all identities work.

If for example all Somali believed they are arab, would they become arab for example? Not really, as long as other arabs and wider society doesn't accept them as arabs,they would never be seen as arabs it doesn't matter how they perceive themselves, so it's not all about self perception saxib.

So my point is, if you or me believe we are not black doesn't really change the fact that we are black in a society like the west as black is defined in that particular society( obviously black can mean different things in different societies)

Another example would be how many persians view themselves as white and don't want to be put in the same category as arabs but most westerners still see them as just brown middle easterners, their self perception changes nothing about who they are in the society they live in

How is this an argument against my point saxib. If most people in America for example had the same views as the commentators, yes we wouldn't be black in America. But this not the view of the wider society in America or the rest of the west. Some Indians for example look more darkskinned than us and they are classified as brown so I have never argued otherwise. My point just was that right now in the west you are black and it doesn't matter if you believe otherwise, social identites like race aren't just defined by you personally and your self perception but also in part by the wider society.
