I was digging some thread on Reddit.

(a Somali brother added a story where it appears his grandfather met JFK)

while reading the comments:

Rather then people talking about the historical pic there too busy talking about our distinction and what not.

In your logic if this is how they see us then this is how they perceive us.
But this is someone who was familiar with Somalis. Obviously whites who live in nariobi, Minneapolis, London etc will eventually easily distinguish Somalis from other black Africans. Same it's true for Arabs who are familiar with Somalis (yemenis, Egyptians, emiratis etc). I can guarantee you that any other white person will not notice much difference if they see a somali. If you go to Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Poland or any country were somalis are not highly represented most people would just see you as any other black African. As i explained before it's just like the difference between southern and northern European. A somali reer baadiye who has never met a white person wouldn't notice any difference between Greeks and other whites

How is this an argument against my point saxib. If most people in America for example had the same views as the commentators, yes we wouldn't be black in America. But this not the view of the wider society in America or the rest of the west. Some Indians for example look more darkskinned than us and they are classified as brown so I have never argued otherwise. My point just was that right now in the west you are black and it doesn't matter if you believe otherwise, social identites like race aren't just defined by you personally and your self perception but also in part by the wider society.
Exactly. There an extreme example of an Indian dude who was dark ( African level skin tone) but with typical indian features. He shaved his hair and applied to university in the US as a black guy to get affirmative action and They believed him. Another example, black Americans used to pretend to be indian to avoid discrimination. How is that possible? Easy they just dressed up with a turban, white folks who never saw an Indian didn't notice anything.

Again, Somalis were never placed in the [Negroid] stock back in the 19-20th century and Somalis were not represented or known as a community at the time either. So your point is flawed.

In the end it doesn’t matter how they perceive us.

We’re unique and that’s that.

Black is a political identity and is not the right way to categorise people.

even if I have to identify a political term does that mean I have something in common with other Africans?

-of course not because our culture, language and genetic profile differs from them.

I don’t know why we aren’t comfortable to identify as just our ethnic term; since that’s more informal to us.

I wouldn’t use the word “just”. Somalis are quite known in the Arab world so they’ll assume he/she is Somali (after their first mistake attempt).

but you’re right to some extent: some Somalis have facial distinction that’s identical to their Cushitic/Horner counterparts.

unless youre from certain parts of cairo or the hejaz region or the uae or south yemen or oman then its unlikely theyll assume youre somali from your face because they have little exppsure to somalis. firstly theyll most likely assume youre sudanese because of features.
