The town of Sheikh was founded in the second half of the 1800s by Sheikh Aadan bin Ahmed, a man belonging to the Subeyr Abdulrahman ‘Awal’ lineage of Ishaaq.

He had studied in Mecca for several years, and upon his return to his motherland, he decided to establish a Tariqa in modern day Sheikh called Dandarāwi. Having consulted with the local Subeyr Awal ‘Isa Musa elders, he obtained land and built Quran Schools thus prompting many to settle.

Somali women in that time period wouldn’t usually wear the hijab. However the female members of the Dandarāwi order, used to cover up and wear the Hijab. This order was the only one, out of the numerous orders in Somaliland, who had women wearing Hijab, and properly covering up.

During the lifetime of Sheikh Aadan bin Ahmad, he enjoyed a great reputation for wisdom and piety and was frequently approached to act as an arbitrator of lineage disputes, in the settlement.
