Unironically, he’s another example of a Somali in a leadership role actually delivering. He’s served in multiple public sector positions from transportation to community outreach, the Department of Revenue, and even as a business analyst at the University of Minnesota before being elected to state office. That’s not the resume of a "bum."

There’s nothing wrong with expanding public services or pushing for fair wages. Wanting an equitable society where corporations don’t hoard all the wealth doesn’t make someone lazy , it makes them informed.

Let’s be honest: Elon Musk tweeting like a 4chan troll, living off subsidies, underpaying workers, and greenwashing massive pollution while cosplaying as a genius that’s the actual bum behavior. Just like every other Robber Baron. Not working class people who demand better.

Being pro-business doesn’t mean ignoring inequality. A healthy city with livable wages and strong services is attractive to investors. Public investment creates long term value, it’s not a handout, it’s infrastructure.

Its weird because there are more Ethiopians and Nigerians in America than Somalis yet they are under the radar for the most part, you hardly hear anything about them despite also being black Africans. You are probably right and its our Muslim identity that makes us stand out. If I had to guess, its probably because Ethiopians and Nigerians tend to blend in with the African American crowd whereas Somalis aren't apart of the collective black American identity.

Just to be clear, this isn’t some one-sided hatefest . Twitter is a chaotic platform filled with trolls and bots. It doesn’t reflect the views of everyday people. Most of the loudest voices aren't even from Minneapolis, where he's actually running for major as a city that's about 85% socially democratic, not some right-wing stronghold. So a lot of the outrage is just misplaced noise.

I disagree he is running on a popular platform and endorsing policies that is supported by most people in Minneapolis that lean more socialist democratic and he ran on the same campaign as a state senator which won him a seat and he got re-elected as well . Where he actually push for higher funding for education and secured minimum wage and labour protection laws for drivers.

He also built a broad coalition as his supporting base as well from across the city.

When it's all said and done he might create a greater upset than Zohran Mamdani.

In america a lot of conservatives really hate cities. Most of them do their best to avoid them since they consider them crime infested liberal hotspots. If you look at the top 30 largest cities in America 27 of them are fun by Democrats, 2 by Republicans, and 1 by an independent.

It’s actually an old 4chan drawing of Barkhad Abdi that got buried for a while. Some Ethiopian trolls probably dug it up later to weaponize it, like you said. A reverse image search links it back to there, 4chan made caricatures of Jews, Black people, and tons of other groups, and you can even see their typical Black caricature in one of the tweets above

It started with an edited photo of an NBA player with an exaggerated forehead. I remember it well because it even got shared by one of the Beta Squad guys on IG. If you scroll back far enough on AJ Shabeel’s Instagram, you’ll find a post from 2018.


That meme faded by 2020, and the version you’re seeing now got revived by TikTok troll accounts last year. They mixed it with that old Barkhad Abdi caricature and pushed it as something new.

Somali politics and business have always been intertwined. Somalis in the America run thousands of businesses generating billions in turnover often forming investment partnerships abroad and engaging in diplomatic outreach in the process.

Example of this cross over between business and politics.

The backlash against Somalis in Minnesota didn’t begin with Ilhan Omar. She simply became a convenient scapegoat for long-standing anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant resentment that already existed.

Also, Somali political representation in Minnesota is largely due to the nature of Minneapolis’ localized and inclusive political system it encourages civic participation far more than most U.S. cities. So this isn't just about ambition; it's about opportunity and community structure.

There’s a reason right-wing politics finds more support in rural America statistically, rural areas tend to have lower levels of education and higher poverty rates. This isn’t just about geography, it’s about the socioeconomic structures that shape political beliefs.

A lot of the loudest critics online don’t even live in Minneapolis or any major city. They just use urban politicians as symbols to rage against, even though they’re far removed from the communities those politicians actually represent.

Aside from our Muslim identity, I think it also has to do with how openly we emphasize our Somali heritage we don’t shy away from it. We’re highly visible, we stick together, support one another, and make our background known. That unity and cultural pride naturally makes us stand out more, and I think that visibility can make some people uncomfortable.

On top of that, Somalis have become increasingly active in politics, entrepreneurship, and community leadership and all within a relatively short span of time. That rapid upward mobility draws attention, and sometimes resentment, in ways other immigrant communities might not experience as intensely.

It’s not that other groups are less successful Nigerians, for example, are extremely accomplished (often due to self-selection factors) but they tend to blend more seamlessly into the African American identity. Somalis, on the other hand, maintain a distinct cultural footprint.

It’s honestly very similar to the resentment you see toward Somalis in Kenya: a mix of political visibility, economic strength, and tight-knit communal ties tends to trigger backlash from wider society.

So yes, it’s our Muslim identity and our transnational practices. Some get angry that Somalis openly support their homeland, send remittances, and talk about returning to contribute back home.

They are both wrong though most Somalis in America are not on welfare and they work and contribute, Somalis pay hundreds of millions into taxes annually, what they send back is their hard earned money.

I doubt it. He’s not outspoken on national politics the way Ilhan Omar is. His focus has been on local policy, passing reforms, writing legislation, and directly serving his constituents.
Between 2020 and 2022 alone, he authored 54 bills that’s an insane work rate.

If he’s elected mayor, the manufactured outrage will likely fade. He’s not interested in stirring controversy he’s focused on doing the work.

Let’s not forget he served as a state senator for years without attracting this level of trolling. The sudden attention only came after he launched his mayoral campaign and it’s clearly tied to the right-wing panic after Zohran’s win in NYC.
