The black label.

The reason Somalis and other Horners don't identify as Black is due to geography. Due to the highlands in Ethiopia, we had virtually no extensive contact with the rest of Africa outside the Horn. Even Somali presence in Kenya is very recent. We have much more in common with Yemen than Cameroon.

Hell, Somalis have had more contact and influence with India and Indonesia than Nigeria and Angola.

You’re right.

The reason is quite apparent on why we don’t label ourselves to these labels.

The label has no purpose and no meaning.

A Somali would only identify with themselves due to: similar culture and sharing exact ethnic background.

But also things that has a bit common familiarity:

like Islam, Arab politics (because of the Arab league, sympathy for Palestinian, and overprotection for al Aqsa ), connecting with the neighbouring horners.

Socially speaking:

Some of those cultural familiarity makes Somalis assume they share cultural contact.

Which makes sense. With meadows it’s not impossible to share contact with them; but they’re too culturally broad.

And it also doesn’t help the label was invented by the cadaan has a way to create a caste over us.

This tops has also been done to death.

People on here identify with themselves depending on where they grow up in.

Culture matters; and your upbringing more than just race

As a diaspora: I had no cultural exposure to the Somali culture; only until my young adulthood life have I been more interested to Identity with my roots.

My parents wanted me assimilate to the majority culture (western culture): so this made it harder for me to integrate with my own; in a social and cultural level.

My mid-teen identity issues

I had my first identity issues when I was in my mid-teen: I was fascinated with race, genetics and phenotypes. I didn’t knew which race, or even culture I’d belong to since I wasn’t expose to my community; so this led to a cringy phase -In my younger days.

The importance of cultural exposure:

It’s really important to expose yourself to a culture you’re familiar with; or something that you believe that’s missing and wanted to integrate.

- My parents don’t want their kids to face discrimination for not knowing the language they supposed to be adapting to.

But there’s one thing they’re forgetting ….

Connecting with their heritages.

It’s actually closer to 50-55% on average. To answer your question though, the average Somali does look Black, but it’s more of a cultural issue that makes a lot Somalis want to separate themselves from other Blacks.
Do you mean black as in skin color or features?

More to do with people being lazy. No one cares about DNA as I’ve pointed out in the other thread when we talking about Sudanese people. We live in a world in which people are focused on appearance and SSA people have a look and regardless of your background you’ll be put in that category.
What look do somalis share with other SSA people apart from skin color?

Quick question, If Somalis are indeed 60% SSA through a group related to or are the ancestors of Nilotic peoples, why do many Somalis get offended with the black label?

Im not arguing pro or against. Personally I’m Somali first and don’t care too much for pan-Africanism or the black label. I’m mostly interested in the visceral dislike many Somalis feel when they’re mostly SSA anyway which is the definition of being ‘black’.

Both. We share a significant amount of ancestry with Nilotes. Therefore, you can see the “Black” features in modern Somalis due to this ancestry.

On the flip side, these Black features are absent in some Somalis and look like dark Arabs.

“we are dark arabs”

not one somali could even fit into the region of yemen with the highest SSA percentage of the Arab world (25+ % average).

Why are you avoiding the question ,I said looks not DNA
Bro We both know Somalis have variety of hair types ,stop playing stupid
That posters post had nothing to do with ‘hair types’ as the Somali man is indeed bald. It was about facial looks yet you dismissed it. You couldn’t argue against that picture. So answer, what makes the guys on top black but not Denni? The guy on top looks more non SSA than at least a good % of Somalis.

You don’t have an answer. Somalis 60% SSA DNA is dominant and many Somalis do indeed look black. No one would mistake them for any other population but SSA. It’s embarrassing for you to think otherwise.

Look at the picture @World posted. A crowd in Somali and one in Yemen. that too
Should give you your answer.
