Who was responsible for signing the agreement in 2014 which is opposed by the Issa chiefs? And what has made the Afar so brazen in the recent history to point they can displace a large number of Somalis? Is it their organisation in comparison to the Issa?

After the Derg regime collapsed there was a dispute as how to demarcate the Afar and Somali border area after ethnic federalism was established by the TPLF which was difficult because both communities are nomadic. Gadamaytu, Undufo and Adaytu were all added to the Afar Region as the Afar made up the majority of the settled population of these towns. Issa nomadic communities expanded into the area and staked claim to the area as part of their established grazing territories and that's how this conflict ensued.

Sitti is too big for the Afar to want to take over. They're only interested in those 3 districts/settlements because they consider it their ancestral territories. The Ciise consider it traditional grazing territory. The Gurgura and Hawiye who also live near the Afar have no conflict with them. So the argument that they want Somali territory isn't really accurate.

The Issa presence in those towns is not only due to grazing grounds. In fact, two of those towns grew of Issa trading hamlets from what I have read. The Issa were kicked out of Gadamaitu by the Ethiopian army in 1977 with the help of the Afar. The Issa then returned, only to be kicked out again.

All in all, It is sad a resolution hasn’t been found for the issues between the communities.

May Allah make it easy for the Somalis in Ethiopia. My friend who is Reer Baabili went to Jigjiga to do shopping. He was told that he will have a difficult time taking the items from K5 Jigjiga back to Baabili town in K4 due to regional border control. He decided to buy from the Harar kilil instead. He said there is no restriction of movement between Harar to Oromia or any other region for that matter except when your coming from K5. They are extra suspicious of Somalis. He went Afdheer Iimey and was shocked to see the lack of roads compared to other regions. No infrastructure, strict border controls etc is a recipe for disaster.

This Jaarso dude I spoke with once had better Somali accent than some Somali clans you would be surprised. Soon you head west from Jigjiga you will be confused on who’s Somali and who isn’t. There’s this Ciise professor who suggested Ciise should give irir Samale the middle finger and join Darood because Darood is the only Somali clan that’s helping Ciise to this day. I totally agree with him.
