I’m beyond impressed with you folks, what did your parents do differently to make sure you didn’t forget the Somali language? I have never met a Somali lander that didn’t speak perfect Somali, and I’m talking about ones that were born in the west. These people make me feel shitty about my Somali skills, just bumped into a 16 year old at my local halaal and he suggested to be my tutor, 16 year old guys my Somali isn’t bad but it takes me little longer to think of certain words and also why is it that you forget how to speak Somali automatically when an older person speaks to you? It’s probably the pressure of making sure I don’t sound stupid or just my anxiety I don’t know guys

It happens with me as well, its because we are bilingual, or in my case trilingual.


The ones that speak good af somali usually have a subtle accent too

It depends on if your family stresses the importance of language. The ones who don’t know it either had parents who speak English, illiterate and think English is heer sare, or simply never gave a crap.

Honestly though why are somali americans somali worse than us europeans? I mean i lived in the west pretty much all my life outside of 3 years in dubai and my Somali is perfect. i read and write with ease.
