Russia kinda effed itself here.They have to take over Ukraine completely otherwise Ukraine will become far more western aligned.

Ukrainians don’t like Russia now, if Russia leaves they will arm to the teeth with western weapons (they west is more than happy to keep Ukraine as a thorn in Russia side).
Even if they don’t join nato they will effectively be part of it.

If they withdraw Russia will just have to invade again in the future against a far stronger Ukraine.
