Some of the heavy-weights, if the finest Somali national* poets (maanso-yahan) in Maanso* in its three types (Gabay, Geeraar, and Jiifto) were:

* These are not "reer hebel" poets.
** A song "Hees" is not considered poem (gabay).

Somali Galbeed:
- Sayid Maxamed Cabdille Xasan (the goat),
- Raage Ugaas
- Qamaan Bulxan
- Samatar Baxnaan
- Saahid Qamaan

Hawd & Nugaal:
- Sayid Maxamed Cabdille Xasan (the goat),
- Ismaciil Mire,
- Qamaan Bulxan,
- Cali Dhuux,
- Adam Carab
- Cali Cilmi Afyare
- Jamac Kediye.

Waq. Galbeed:
- Gaariye (de facto poet & scholar),
- Hadraawi ( more of a thinker & philosopher),
- Cali Jamac Haabiil.

Bari:
- Khalif Sh Maxamed (one of a kind)

Mudug:
- Keenadiid (a thinker, philiosopher, and social observer).

Gedo:
- Yamyam (a remarkable poet).

Awdal:
- Xasan Sh Mumin (An old wise man).

I intentionally listed Sayid Maxamed in two regions, 'cos whilst he was from the former, he indeed was from the latter.

This is a brief list, and there are many poets in "Geeraar" & "Jiifto", which are more popular in the South, but I'll let others to add.

yamyam is from mudug no?

From the last 100 years? Many to choose from but my favourite would be Hasan Sheekh Muumin (1937-2008) from Awdal. He was the creator of the Somaliland national anthem Samo ku waar and he also wrote the first and most famous Somali piece of literature and play in Somali history called Shabeel Naagood that was designed to uplift women in Somali society, he composed all of the songs in the play and all the poems. He also wrote Marxab Marxab Yaa Ramadaan which was the most famous Somali song during the holy month. His work is a masterpiece of Somali literature and was the only play ever translated into foreign languages and published by Oxford University. No other Somali play has received as much attention as Shabeel Naagood.

Some of the best lines in his play:

"Women have no share in the encampments of this world
And it is men who made these laws, to their own advantage.
By God, by God, men are our enemies, though we ourselves nurtured them
We suckled them at our breasts, and they maimed us:
We do not share peace with them."

Shallaayo's song to the orchestra:

"Like a suckling lioness when she has lost her cubs
Or like a mountain oryx with an arrow in his body,
Lamenting and calling, yesterday at dead of night.
Again and again I stumbled down the steep banks—but sought you all in vain.
You know what seared me—then judge it fairly, for you have wronged me!
His prosperity, and the sour milk he used to drink, all gone
And who sits in an empty corral, his children hungry
And his camel-calves orphaned—thus am I ill with bitter grief.
You know what seared me-then judge it fairly,
for you have wronged me" (pp. 111, 113).

One of his best poems called Good sense in the play:

"Gorayadu ilmaheed aroori bay dhigtaayoo aboodigu ku laayaa, shimbirtuna aroosay ilaxidhoo ammaana bay ubadkeeda seexisaa.
Kala awran labaduye edebtiyo aqoontiyo asluubtay isku dhaafeen. Caqligii wanaagsani itaal in uu ka roon yahay bal eegoo u fiirsada.
Ilka weynoo maroodigu araduu mirtaa buu cadawgu ku ugaadhaa, aboorkuna duddumadaan aragnay buu dhistaayoo naftiisa ku ilaashaa.
Kala awran labaduye edebtiyo aqoontiyo asluubtay isku dhaafeen. Caqligii wanaagsani itaal in uu ka roon yahay bal eegoo u fiirsada.
Ma ogtahay sagaaradu awaarahay qoddaayoo saaladeeda ku aastaa, libaaxuna ma asturee hilimaduu ka arooruu digadiisa ku aslaa.
Kala awran labaduye edebtiyo aqoontiyo asluubtay isku dhaafeen. Caqligii wanaagsani itaal in uu ka roon yahay bal eegoo u fiirsada."

Translation by Martin Orwin:

"The ostrich places Her young in the open Where the hawk kills But the small bird marries And beds her young In a nest that's safe . Different in size, the two In manners, wisdom And sense are opposite See how good sense Is superior to strength And think on it.

The elephant with large tusks Grazes at night in land Where the enemy hunts him But the termite builds The mound we see Protects himself within it.
Different in size, the two In manners, wisdom And sense are opposite See how good sense Is superior to strength And think on it.

Do you know the dikdik? She digs at the dust Buries her droppings But does the lion conceal his? The path to the watering hole He stains with his dung.
Different in size, the two In manners, wisdom And sense are opposite See how good sense Is superior to strength And think on it."
