From the last 100 years? Many to choose from but my favourite would be Hasan Sheekh Muumin (1937-2008) from Awdal. He was the creator of the Somaliland national anthem Samo ku waar and he also wrote the first and most famous Somali piece of literature and play in Somali history called Shabeel Naagood that was designed to uplift women in Somali society, he composed all of the songs in the play and all the poems. He also wrote Marxab Marxab Yaa Ramadaan which was the most famous Somali song during the holy month. His work is a masterpiece of Somali literature and was the only play ever translated into foreign languages and published by Oxford University. No other Somali play has received as much attention as Shabeel Naagood.
Some of the best lines in his play:
"Women have no share in the encampments of this world
And it is men who made these laws, to their own advantage.
By God, by God, men are our enemies, though we ourselves nurtured them
We suckled them at our breasts, and they maimed us:
We do not share peace with them."
Shallaayo's song to the orchestra:
"Like a suckling lioness when she has lost her cubs
Or like a mountain oryx with an arrow in his body,
Lamenting and calling, yesterday at dead of night.
Again and again I stumbled down the steep banks—but sought you all in vain.
You know what seared me—then judge it fairly, for you have wronged me!
His prosperity, and the sour milk he used to drink, all gone
And who sits in an empty corral, his children hungry
And his camel-calves orphaned—thus am I ill with bitter grief.
You know what seared me-then judge it fairly,
for you have wronged me" (pp. 111, 113).
One of his best poems called Good sense in the play:
