PL and Somalia in general need to have serious discusssions on the role of ‘Elders’. They may have had a role in a nomadic society in terms of dispute resolution, but they should have a limited role as the country/regions progresses and there are local elected leaders.
Look at the damage the likes of Boqor Burhaan has done in PL, undermining state authority.
The other problem is anybody can claim to be an elder, ugaas, etc. I think Somaliland has it right in having a system of guurti with legitimate elders that have specific roles.
