Mogadishu's Building Developers need to be stopped

Mogadishu should have kept the beautiful aesthetic of old, white washed buildings only. Mogadishu and other coastal towns in South Somalia always looked gorgeous with white washed buildings surrounded by palm trees.

Lately, there is a rise in hideous, Eastern European, communist-era inspired monstrosities that are popping up all over the place.

BEFORE : Elegant, Classy, Tropical, Exotic (pre-civil war)

2021- It looks like a depressing, cold, communist country.

Pre-1991 Xamar is dead!

That doesn't mean people have to lose their sense of aesthetics?

Mogadishu pre-civil war was one of the most stunning places I have ever seen. It's not just Mogadishu, even Puntland is being attacked by this one company I don't like, they love aluminium foil looking buildings.

There need to be rules in place to stop these people from destroying the landscape with these hideous creations.

they build too close to the sea as well

Those old houses would be costly and need a lot of specialised artisans that Somalia just does not have. People need affordable housing, aesthetics isn't a priority and won't be for quite some time. Give Somalia 20 years of peace and you will see aesthetics become a priority. No one is going to invest building an expensive villa with the risk of it being bombed any day.

Pre-1991 architecture was a mix between islamic and Italian colonial architecture. That was not easy or cheap to build. The Italians did not care about cost they were just building for prestige. Blame the idiots that destroyed all those building in the civil war! It it was it is! Can't go back in time!

These developers are building old style apartments that were common in the 1960s and even earlier. They must be saving a lot of money compared to what modern apartment complexes cost.

This is what happens when there is zero government oversight.I assume their goal is to get people to turn to apartment living instead of normal homes.

They will probably buy up a lot of land and replicate these eyesores all over the city. Smh

I want to see the price range for one apartment.
I don't think they are cheaper than a normal family home.

Looks great to me. Those high rise apartment buildings are very much needed in Muqdisho.

Plus those old buildings are still there

High rises is not the problem

The design and ugly colour combinations is the issue.

Even if they were white it would look much better, instead these geniuses decided to use

ORANGE
YELLOW
GRAY

The old builidings are still in abdi aziiz, shangani, xamarweyne and boondheere. Most of these new buildings are in hodan, wadajir and howlwadaag etc.

People online reposting the same buildings over and over has everyone thinking the whole city looks like that lol.

This is why UNESCO heritage listing is important.

Barre was such a dumbass, he never registered Xamar as a UNESCO world heritage site.

It’s only that UNESCO is toying with the idea but it’s too late.

It may have even saved Xamar during the war.
