Somalia was a Marxist-Leninist government under Siad Barre, and he bought unprecedented change in the course of three decades (which is unusual for any African country). I remember vaguely reading that it was referred to as the 'Switzerland of Africa' at one point. Do any of you believe that Marxism can be the radical change that Somalia needs in modern times as well? Especially considering the violence and extremism caused by Al-Shabab and the perpetual funding of duroos from Saudi-Arabia that causes more religious devotion.

(I'm aware Siad Barre wasn't a perfect man, but please for the sake of the question, place his discrimination against some tribes aside for a moment.)

The development that happened after the democratically elected president was murdered by his clan was because Siad Barre was a great leader, not because of his ideology. At that time, the Soviet Union was a good and resourceful ally. Now? Well... it doesn't exist.

I'd beg to differ- Barre was unusually vocal about his adherence to Marxism. The ideology was also clearly acknowledged--partly in view of the country's economic and military dependence on the Soviet Union. Though I can agree that the Somali people, might not have been as aware and strictly in favor of socialist ideals as he was.

Get a few nationalist officers to hold a coup. And after that they could make the military budget 1 trillion and destroy Ethiopia Kenya djibouti and al shabaab at the same time. The only way the issue can be solved is by blood being spilled and I mean until the blood of amison soldiers is spilling through the streets

It's true that Barre was not a true socialist, rather he followed that ideology as it was convenient. He captured over 90 % of the Ogaden area but wanted to go all the way to Addis Ababa. We could have won the war if Barre agreed with the Soviet Union to not capture any more territory as they said.

Marxism is a stupid system that failed. Capitalism is how the world was run in the past, how the world is run in the present and how it will be run in the future

He's right. Marxism is a failure. There are no economic incentives and no gain to be made for productivity which creates "degeneracy and lazy people" as @Adheer Warsame said.

The only areas where the Soviet Union sustained innovation was through enormous efforts in military and aerospace technology. The US dominated every other sector.
