After that up until 2006-2009 was the Ethiopian war backed by the US prior to that fighting was at a halt and progress was being made. Al-shabab happened because of the Ethiopian invasion in 2006. Before that, Islamic courts union rose to power and stopped the fighting between warlords in southern Somalia. Somalis couldn’t unite because of qabyaalad, so we used Islam.
Islamic courts union or ICU was a moderate faction. By all means it wasn’t perfect but they achieved something remarkable. Peace.
Due to war on terror United States encouraged Ethiopia and they did, partly also due to their own interest. Al-shabaab was a radical group within ICU, numbering only in few hundreds. They held no power and were on the sidelines.
The invasion quickly filled their ranks as they were the military wing also. After the invasion failed, Al-shabaab had gained immense power and turned to brutalise fellow somalis.
The west and us somalis equally are to be blamed for Al-shabaab. The west for creating them due to ”war on terror” and us for not fighting back against the organisation.
The west made the ottoman fall because they sided with the Germans in ww1, they didn’t give a f*ck about arabs and their Wahhabism. They just wanted the arabs to help them overthrow the ottomans. Wahabbism existed way before that and Even ruled the saudi peninsula.
