In part III of this volume includes all the Treaties, Engagements and Sunnuds, relating to the Arabian and African Coasts.

Zaila and Tajowra were placed in a separate category from "SOMALEES"

There is also another Engagement included under the "SOMALEES" category (though not highlighted on the contents page)


An Engagement concluded between Lieutenant-Colonel W. L. Merewether, C.B., Political Resident, Aden, and
Sultan Mahmood bin Yoosoof, Chief of the Mejerteyu tribe of Somalis and elders of the said tribe.

- Treaties, Engagements with "TAJOURA AND ZAILA", "SOMALIS" and "SHOA" are now sub-categorized under "DANKALI COAST AND SHOA"

Also, In this revised volume there are some slight variations regarding the history of Somalis.

A map is also included in this revised edition, unfortunately the relevant half cannot be seen.

The more noticeable differences are:

-Agreements with the Sultan of Socotra are now included

-Agreements relating to Socotra are categorized in Part III - "Treaties and Engagements relating to Africa".

Unfortunately, there's no further information about the various tribes, and language/s spoken in Socotra at that time.

These volumes provide insights into the history of various tribes in the Middle-East and Africa.

That being said, its difficult to find terms like "Oromo", "Afar", "Ethiopia" in these Volumes... instead there's Galla Tribe, Southern Abysinnia, Shoa, Dankali Coast etc...

Nice post

It's interesting how different the British and Italians were when it came to Somali Lands. In Somalia the Italians came with over 200k men and settled. The English just signed treaties with coastal clans and didn't really bother with the landlocked tribes. They were more concerned about the trade routes along the red sea

There is a reason why WW2 was a blessing for those living under the italian colony. With the collapse of the colony in 1941 due to the British conquest of the aforementioned territory, we were able to halt the Italians from creating a mini Italy in the horn of africa. The scale of Italian migration to the colony was ridiculously high mind you.

What is interesting is that a British individual whose name I could not recall at this moment of time wanted the NFD territory, British Somaliland protectorate, former Italian somaliland (under british administration post 1941) and the Ogaden to be administrated as one 'Greater British Somaliland' which is essentially 4/5 of 'Greater Somalia' (French Somaliland being the missing link). Unfortunately such plans did not materialise, ogaden was handed to Ethiopia a couple of years later, former italian colony was under UN trusteeship until 1960 and nfd remained to be part of british east africa.
