FGM research survey; could you help??

To whom it may concern

My name is Ann-Marie. I am a 36yr old mother of 4 children studying an Access to Higher Education (Nursing and midwifery) at Doncaster College. I hope to become a midwife who specialises in FGM.

As part of my access course I have to write a research report on a healthcare issue of my choice. I have chosen to do mine on the effects that FGM has on pregnancy and birth as I am very passionate about this taboo subject and hope to make people more aware of the health implications of this illegal practice.

I would be very grateful if you could help me collect some information for my project by way of asking if any women who have undergone FGM to complete my brief questionnaire. My questionnaire asks for no identifiable information and will only be seen by myself and my tutor, abiding by strict confidentiality practices.

I have attached a web link; which will forward you to an online version of the questionnaire.

The web link is :

Thank you for taking the time to read my post

Thanks

Ann-Marie

Thats swell of you. I hope women see this and respond to it.

It is important to not villainize practice of FGM though. The only difference between FGM and male circumcision are the complications, and even that is only due to the crude surgical practices where it's performed. If male circumcision is alright, then I see nothing wrong with surgically (Western standards) performed FGM.

Nope can't fucking reply @nucleus this is some stupid shit. She didn't even get GSCE's and she thinks she's a Phd candidate for African Muffin Studies as taught by Jon Snow's retiring ball sack on Channel 4 and al Jazeera documentarys.net. Just one bit of advice Anne-Marie if you hadn't spent your teen years pulling your labia under your desk instead of studying hard, you wouldn't have developed this weird fetish and offended the internet with your vulgarity.

FGM is barbaric, i am glad its outlawed in most of Somalia.

Even the Arabs don't practice this. Just Somalis and some other Africans.

What's the female perspective? Where on planet earth do strangers have the right to ask questions about one's private parts as 'research'? She could be a pedophile or sexual deviant and we allow her to post this? What if a young impressionable browser is divulging things to her that she should be discussing with her doctor or the police?

Its anonymous. The questions were very academic. She seemed genuinely interested. And it's important that midwives study and learn about FGM related issues.

Don't make me feel bad nayaa

Have some respect for our guests Shamis.

She was conducting research in her field. If you don't want to contribute to her research, that's fine but have the decency not to attack her.

She's not a midwife. She's pre university and there are ethics that need to be adhered to in healthcare that she is frankly knows nothing about because she's not even a midwifery student. Lets call all year 1 A Level students physicists and politicians while we're at it. Hand that biology student a scalpel and let him operate because he poses his questions so well.

I remember this Somali guy who was a few years older than me studying
Access to Medicine course, it was no joke walahi compared to the shitty A-levels I was
doing. Mother of three studying a Access course must be very difficult. The only thing wrong with this survey, anyone can complete it. How can it be used in a serious research?

You a raise a very good point here. I'm sure there are professional surveys out there that ask the exact same questions.

But she is just being an eager student, conducting a project that allows her to practice what it would be like as a professional researcher.

All we can do is educate her about the language she used (calling it criminal, although it is a "crime" in many "civilized" countries) and how it can be perceived as offensive.

@ciidhartha No. I should not have to teach her how to be a better student, or better future midwife seeing as I'm not experienced in that field- she could call an FGM organisation for help. There is at least one currently in operation in the UK and that should have been her first port of call. What about her tutors? This is a complex surgical and psychological issue, are monkeysurvey and this forum appropriate for this type of research? What about the people she's asking? Do they not deserve to speak to a qualified person? Have you considered what sort of experiences you're asking them to relive? This is normally done in a hospital with trained staff and the students would have been at the appropriate level of education and experience.

@nucleus what did you say that was' worse' than my *testing testing* labia pulling comment?
