Kulaha Ethiopia is building a railway. They already have one, and it's called the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway.

As if Ethiopia will build this for an unrecognized region. Just hilarious. It costed $4.5 billion, which is like 10 times the total investment for Berbera port.

In theory it wouldn't cost much to build a railroad from Dire Dawa to the border , the hard part would be getting funding for the Somaliland side. Ethiopia is in the process of taking out loans on behalf of Somaliland for the highways along the laters side of the corridor.

Electricity will probably also be needed in Somaliland. There is Ethiopian public utilities up to the border in Wajaale and Awbere. We need to import some of it into SL.

I didn't disagree about the highway part, but there is no doubt that Djibouti will be remaining Ethiopia's main port for a long time. The Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway opened only 5 months ago.

It all depends on whether or not the UAE build the additional berths at Berbera fast enough.

Berbera is very cheap in terms of taxes. So there is an incentive for Somali and Ethiopia businessmen to move their goods there from Djibouti.

Berbera Port won't be at it's final stage for at least another 3 years. It's getting a massive upgrade. I didn't say this is happening overnight but it's definitely happening. Ethiopia didn't buy 19% for it to not be it's main port eventually. It's the real reason Djibouti kicked UAE out, not ownership of their port , but ownership of the Berbera port.

Honestly Djibouti won't be able to handle the future volume of it's neighbors. Djibouti is also starting to look out and service the rest of Africa, leaving more room for Somaliland and Sudan to increase their shares. Plus if oil is produced than a railroad wouldn't be impossible especially for the long stretches of the Somali regional state. It is also has the shortest distance for parts of the Oromo region.

They didn't get it for free. They are putting their money up in the form of development .

If you don't see how Djibouti ending UAE contract had to do with Ethiopia then you don't know Djibouti. Ever been there? Despite their port and multiple foreign military base its still a huge shithole because the place is corrupt the people at the top keep all the money. You can check Djibouti is very undeveloped. If Ethiopia didn't get involved with Berbera Djibouti wouldn't have kicked UAE out.

You know UAE ran djiboutis port right? You think the djiboutians didn't care when the people that ran their port decided to build a new port to compete with djiboutis , and decided to work on the project with Ethiopia which also happened to be djiboutis #1 customer? Ever heard of conflict of interest ?

Use a little bit of logic, if the djiboutians understood this you should too , if Ethiopia owns 19% of a port , why would they continue to pay high tax to Djibouti to use there's? When they can divert their 100 million population to use Berbera and split the tax revenue with UAE/SL? It literally defeats the purpose of owning a port.

19% stake really doesn't mean much when you are the sole user of the port. It's just a 19% reduced price for use of the port. It's a good deal for both countries though.
